The days of wired headphones are waning. They’re great in a pinch, but many consumers lean toward wireless headphones. If you’re new to the headphone game, you’ll quickly realize that listening to audio isn’t as simple as plugging in a cable.
Whether you just bought your Echo Buds or have had them for a while, pairing can be tricky but not impossible. Either way, don’t worry because we will guide you step by step in setting up your Echo Buds.
Pairing your Echo Buds
One of the main advantages of having Echo Buds is that you have access to Alexa on the go. But first you need to configure everything and make sure it works correctly.
Here’s how you can set up your Echo Buds:
Turn on your phone’s Bluetooth

Open the Alexa app on your phone
If you don’t have the Alexa app yet, you can download it from App Store either Google Play Store. Also, make sure you are logged into your Amazon account.
Press and hold the button on your Echo Buds
To put your Buds into pairing mode, press and hold the physical button until the light flashes blue. The Echo Buds should appear on your device when connected.
Place the Buds in your ear
Note that there is a right and a left button. You can use just one or both, but because they are stereo headphones, you will have a better experience using both at the same time.
Tap the option to pair when it appears on your phone.
Pairing without the Alexa app
You can stream anything wirelessly through your Echo Buds without using the Alexa app. However, that means you won’t have the benefits of Alexa services.
This is what you should do:
- Turn on Bluetooth on your computer, tablet, or phone.
- Open the case of your Echo Buds and press and hold the button on the case for three seconds. The Echo buttons should be inside the case this time.
- Release the button. Now take the Echo Buds and place them in your ears.
- Go to your device and use the Bluetooth settings to pair the two successfully.
These are the two ways you can pair your Echo Buds with devices. The Alexa app will work with Android and iOS devices and you can pair them with any Bluetooth-enabled device.
Troubleshooting
You’ve followed all the steps above, but your Echo Buds are causing you difficulties. Fortunately, Amazon gave us a quick and easy solution to discover the underlying causes of our Echo Bud problems.
For such a simple case, it is actually equipped to tell you what problem your technician is having. Lights and flashes of different colors mean different things. Let’s go over them to help you overcome your error code:
- Battery – Green, yellow and red light indicate battery life. If you see green, then you have about two hours to live. Yellow means you have less than two hours left and red means your battery is below 5%. If your earbuds show a red or yellow light, please charge the case with the earbuds inside and try again.
- Flashing red – This indicates a problem with the connection. Either the pins on your Buds got dirty or clogged with debris, or they weren’t paired correctly. If you see this light, try cleaning them or unpairing and reconnecting them.
- Flashing blue – The flashing blue light means your Buds are ready to pair. If you don’t see this, you are not entering pairing mode. Try charging your case for a moment and then press and hold the button again. Also, check that your Bluetooth is turned on (the receiving device).
What can you do with Echo Buds?
If you pair your Echo Buds using the Alexa app, you’ll have a full set of actions at your disposal. No need to hold and click anything. All you have to do is say “Alexa” and then give a command which could be something like “lower the volume” or “skip this song” or even “call Mike.”
But you can also do something more complex like reduce noise or enable the Passthrough function. The noise reduction option ensures that you don’t hear too much background noise when you’re outside. On the other hand, the Passthrough feature ensures that you get enough ambient sounds when you need them. Think about airport announcements or when someone talks to you on the street.
All you have to do is put the Echo Buds in your ears and double-tap each touch sensor to switch from Passthrough to Noise Reduction. You can also ask Alexa to do it for you.
What if Alexa doesn’t respond?
Imagine feeling so comfortable asking Alexa to help you with different tasks, and then it suddenly stops responding. That can create a rather inconvenient situation. Don’t panic, it’s probably something you can fix relatively quickly. These are some of the things you can check:
- Is the volume on your phone low? Make sure to increase it.
- Is the Alexa app open? Are your Echo Buds online? Otherwise, be sure to bring them back online.
- Is Wi-Fi down? Maybe you should restart your router.
- Recheck the Bluetooth connection on your device.
In case your Echo Buds lose Bluetooth connection frequently, you should probably restart your smartphone, go to the Alexa app, and unpair your earbuds. Then start the pairing process again. If the problem persists, you may need to factory reset your phone or other device and go through the entire setup process.
