Although there are a wide variety of alternatives, Google Meet is one of the most popular video conferencing applications. It is attached to G Suite and is not a run-of-the-mill video calling app. Expect high definition videos and up to 30 users per meeting.
However, sometimes you’ll want to turn off the camera during the meeting, for whatever reason. You need this option to be available and at your disposal at all times, and we are pleased to inform you that it is available. Here’s how to turn off the Google Meet video camera.
Disable the video feature in Google Meet
As soon as you launch the Google Meet app, your camera will turn on and you will probably see yourself. If you want to make sure your camera is not recording, tap or click the camera icon at the bottom of the screen. Yes, this works for all versions of the app/web app.
It’s as simple as that. Additionally, you can also turn off your microphone by clicking/tapping the microphone icon right next to the camera icon.
Change the camera
If you’re on a Google Meet call on your computer, you’ll practically have an active camera. However, taking full advantage of both cameras on your phone/tablet can go a long way. Although the selfie camera is enabled in Google Meet by default, you may want to show your room to other call participants. Maybe you want them to see the board, or maybe you want to show them something. Either way, the rear camera of any phone has much better specifications than the front camera.
- To change your phone/tablet’s camera while on Google Meet, join a video call and then tap or click the three-dot icon in the top right corner of the screen.
- Then select change camera.
Adjust the camera
Although Google Meet allows call participants to experience video conferencing meetings in high definition, the camera options may be too complicated. The application is designed to offer the best quality with minimal adjustments.
Google Meet is equipped with a feature that brightens the camera exposure, which is convenient for dimly lit rooms; This way, people can see you more clearly in dark areas.
However, in good lighting conditions, this feature may not provide the best video experience. Sure, it won’t hurt and it’s not too terrible, but turning off this brightness feature would be the best way to go.

Fortunately, this is possible. At least on iOS devices, of course.
- To turn off this setting, open the Google Meet app. You’ll need to join a video call before you can turn off the setting. Once you’ve joined a video call, navigate to the three dots icon.
- Then select Do not adjust for very low light. This will disable the feature, allowing for a natural and pristine experience. In low light conditions, you can turn the feature back on by following the exact same instructions.
Dynamic switching between audio devices
If you’re a busy person and often hold meetings on the go, Google Meet lets you switch audio devices. For example, start your office meeting using your headphones, continue in your car and switch to Bluetooth speakers, etc.
- To do this, navigate to the top of the screen, select the current audio source, and then select the device you want to switch to.
