Xander Zayas faces his toughest challenge to date when the 21-year-old fights former world champion Patrick Teixeira in his first headlining fight in New York.
Zayas won the NABF super welterweight title in 2022 and has 12 knockout wins. The two-time US National Championship gold medalist signed with Top Rank when he was 16 and headlines a fight at the Hulu Theater in front of family and friends.
He faces a former world champion in Teixeira, who at one point held the WBO super welterweight title. On a three-fight winning streak, all of those wins came by knockout, along with 25 wins via power punch.
Zayas is under pressure as he headlines an arena where he has competed several times against someone who has held gold. Ranked sixth on The Jugo Mobile’ 25 Under 25 list for 2023, Zayas is ready for the next step in his evolution into a superstar.
“In this fight I have to be smart. I have to follow the game plan. I have to block out all the emotions that will be part of that night,” Zayas said. “Obviously it is an important night for Puerto Ricans. But we’re going to have to block that. We are going to have to be patient and work little by little. “I have ten rounds to do the damage I want to do and put on a great show.”
