Cry no more, New York Jets fans.
Undrafted receiver Jason Brownlee returned to the organization as a practice squad player. The undrafted receiver, who joined the team as a rookie in 2023, signed with the Jets on Friday. In a corresponding move, New York released receiver Lance McCutcheon from the practice squad to create room for Brownlee.
After surviving the initial roster cut to the 53-man limit for the second straight year, Brownlee landed on waivers a day later. The Jets claimed former Chicago Bears rookie tight end Brenden Bates on Wednesday, removing Brownlee from the roster.
Fortunately for New York and a portion of its fan base, Brownlee was released and became eligible to sign with any team. The Southern Miss product chose to join the organization that gave him a chance to launch his NFL career 16 months ago.
As rookies in OTAs, Brownlee and fellow undrafted draftee Xavier Gipson were both publicly recognized for their performances by future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Both went on to make their NFL debuts with Gang Green and maintained their roster status throughout the season.
Brownlee was active for seven games in 2023, logging 311 snaps on offense. He was targeted just eight times as a receiver, hauling in five catches for 56 yards. He recorded his first career touchdown reception in a 30-28 victory over the Washington Commanders on Christmas Eve at MetLife Stadium.
McCutcheon was a member of the Jets’ practice squad last year but did not appear in games. He made 10 regular-season appearances as a rookie with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022.
The Jets currently have a capped P-Squad of players, all of whom participated in training camp this summer. In addition to the 16 permitted members, New York has a 17-man unit thanks to an International Pathway Program exemption for foreign-born offensive tackle Obinna Eze.
