This offseason for the New York Jets has already been a busy one. Aaron Glenn has been completely reshaping the coaching staff, moving on from a lot of position coaches.
Offensively, the staff is a completely new unit, with Frank Reich as the offensive coordinator. But, he’s far from the only new addition.
In fact, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets’ newest hire is a familiar name, but a new face. According to Schefter, the Jets are hiring a third generation of the Ryan family, bringing in Seth Ryan as their new passing game coordinator.
Jets to hire another member of Ryan family for coaching staff
“A new generation of Ryans in New York: the Jets are hiring the Lions assistant tight ends coach Seth Ryan as their passing game coordinator, per sources,” Schefter reports.
The Detroit Lions are losing Ryan to the Jets this offseason, as the son of iconic head coach Rex Ryan is now joining the Jets.
Rex Ryan coached the Jets for a long time, from 2009 through 2013. He went 96-46, making the playoffs twice, and winning two games each season in the last good years for the Jets.
But, before Rex joined the Jets coaching staff, his father, Buddy Ryan, also spent a while with the team. From 1968 through 1975, he was the Jets’ defensive line coach, helping the Jets win their lone Super Bowl in 1968.

A while later, Rex became the head coach of the Jets for six years. And now, over a decade later, another member of the Ryan family is coming to the Jets.
This time, it is Rex Ryan’s son, Seth Ryan, who will be the Jets’ new passing game coordinator. Glenn and Reich are hoping the offense turns a corner, and Ryan will try to help do just that for the Jets this upcoming season.
This is a fun hire for the Jets, and even if it might not work out, it’s worth a shot with how much the Jets’ offense struggled last year. It’s hard to go anywhere but up in 2026, and Ryan could bring some good luck to the Jets.
