The Los Angeles Lakers have a different vibe this year. After hiring former NBA wing and analyst JJ Redick as head coach in July, there’s been an infusion of energy that can only be attributed to the team’s belief in his potential to lead them the right way. Since his arrival, Redick has preached analytics, development, and structure, moving away from the rather archaic offenses of Frank Vogel and Darvin Ham.
It would be fair to say the Lakers will be emphasizing three-pointers in 2024-25 and beyond. Anthony Davis will be used as an offensive hub, not just a defensive anchor. LeBron James will screen and make plays from the high or pinch post more frequently. Redick is hoping to get the best out of D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves rather than one or the other.
Redick will also have a shorter rotation than Ham did last season, ESPN’s DaveMcMenamin reported Tuesday that he plans to use a nine-man unit.
This is a wise decision, as it’s easier to build consistency. Players know when they’ll come in and what they’re expected to do. That doesn’t necessarily mean a player’s role will be simple but there’ll be more clarity. To that point, the Lakers have lauded Redick’s attention to detail, which lends itself to the notion that the team will be sharp and connected.
Interestingly, Lakers shooting guard Max Christie sounds like he’ll be in the rotation. Drafted 35th overall in 2022, the 21-year-old has averaged just 3.8 points per game, playing bit roles. However, the Michigan State product has made 37.8% of his three-pointers.
