Joe Gomez has had a curious summer.
An impressive campaign in 2023/24, where the 27-year-old demonstrated previously unseen versatility, earned him a call-up to the England squad.
Gomez boarded the plane for Euro 2024 but was one of only three England outfield players alongside captain Lewis Dunk and Crystal Palace newcomer Adam Wharton not to see a minute of action.
He is now set to return to action at Liverpool, where he is the club’s longest-serving player after joining from Charlton Athletic in 2015.
However, when reports emerged that Gomez was a potential foil in a deal to bring former Everton winger Anthony Gordon to Anfield from Newcastle, that status was called into question.
The trail of that signing has gone cold, partly due to Newcastle securing the fees of Yankuba and Elliot Anderson to ease their PSR concerns.
And a report of The times On Sunday he said Gomez had stressed he was “committed” to Liverpool in talks with new boss Arne Slot that took place during Euro 2024.
Virgil van Dijk’s place looks fairly open, with Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and youngster Jarell Quansah all in the running. Gomez also filled in at right-back and left-back, as well as occasionally serving as a holding midfielder when injuries plagued Liverpool last season.
