Josh Allen began his Sunday afternoon with a play reminiscent of his inconsistent, mistake-prone, younger self. A two-handed chest pass right to the other team for an interception? That was certainly a blast to the past.
But this is the present. And in the present, the Buffalo Bills’ QB is the MVP and might as well be Superman. That bizarre mistake felt like a long time ago by the end of Sunday’s game.
That’s because from that point on, even another mistake or two couldn’t hold back Allen. He was his full-throttle, magnificent self en route to six touchdown contributions and a 44-32 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
What didn’t Allen do?
He had one of his wild, run-around-the-backfield-for-a-while-before-finding-a-receiver-open, insane touchdown passes to Tyrell Shavers in the back left corner of the end zone.
He had a perfect recognition of a mismatch when he found James Cook matched up with a defensive end on a pass route and dropped a dime to his RB for a touchdown.
He let Ty Johnson do most of the work on a 52-yard catch-and-run touchdown.
And then near the goal line, Allen did it all himself.
Not once, not twice, but three times Allen powered in a rushing touchdown.
The third one brought a whole heaping of Buffalo teammates to get Allen, and the Bills, over the line.

Fittingly, that touchdown for Allen tied Cam Newton for the regular season record for rushing TDs by a quarterback.

Late in the CBS broadcast, the crew shared one more remarkable stat.
There have been two games in NFL history in which a player had three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns. They have both been done by Allen.
Truly, there’s no one like Josh.
The Bills needed this in a big way. They’d stunk it up in Miami a week ago against a bad Dolphins team in a game that somehow was never even close.
And when in need, Buffalo turns to the best player in the NFL.
The Bills may not lead the AFC East right now. They may have plenty of reasons for concern, from the run defense to the wide receiver position to whatever the full reason is that Keon Coleman didn’t play on Sunday.
But they’ve got Joshua Patrick Allen.
And so very often, that is more than enough.
