Lady Gaga has revealed the candid reason why she never denied rumors she was a transgender woman early in her career.
During a recent appearance on the second episode of Netflix’s “What’s Next? The Future With Bill Gates,” Lady Gaga addressed the infamous 2011 rumors that she was transgender.
Speaking about her early days, the Born This Way singer said: “I’ve travelled all over the world. I’ve travelled on tours and to promote my records and in almost every interview I’ve done, they’ve said… there’s this image on the internet that’s been doctored…
“They were like, ‘There are rumors that you’re a man. What do you have to say about that?’ The reason I didn’t answer the question is because I didn’t feel like a victim of that lie and I thought, ‘What about a child accused of this who would think that a public figure like me would be ashamed?'”
She continued: “I’ve been in situations where fixing a rumor wasn’t in the best interest of other people’s well-being. In that case, I tried to provoke thought and disrupt in another way. I tried to use misinformation to create another disruptive point.”
In 2011, Anderson Cooper asked Gaga during an interview on CNN If she had “a male member,” the singer then responded: “Why the hell am I going to waste my time and make a press release about whether or not I have a penis? My fans don’t care and neither do I.”
The “Joker: Folie à Deux” star has long been a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, and a particular advocate for transgender rights. Earlier this year, she met with transgender media personality Dylan Mulvaney and spoke out against the abuse she has suffered.
Gaga expressed her deep sense of protection for the trans community, saying they continue to lead the way with “their endless grace and inspiration in the face of constant degradation, intolerance, and physical, verbal and mental violence.”
