The Los Angeles Lakers are finishing the regular season on a tremendous run that has come somewhat unexpectedly. LeBron James has embraced his role as a third option, and the team is starting to look like a legitimate contender. James has made it clear since the summer that he wants to compete at a high level.
“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Rich Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”
James still has a major decision to make this offseason—whether to retire, re-sign with Los Angeles, or explore other options. Bronny James earning more minutes could certainly strengthen the Lakers’ case.
“The path of least resistance involves both James as members of the Lakers next season. That would, of course, involve a lot of sacrifice on LeBron’s part. That could be the trade-off for getting to run the bench unit minutes with Bronny in 2026-27. If Bronny continues on the upward trend everyone is noticing over his first two years with the Lakers, that could be a regular occurrence for the pair in 2026-27. It gives LeBron yet another thing to mull over before making his (final) decision in the summer,” Lake Show Life’s Syvatoslav Rovenchuk wrote.
While Bronny could help keep him in Los Angeles, salary considerations may push him in the opposite direction.
“The Lakers are going to want to fit this team around Luka Doncic moving forward. … If LeBron chooses to prioritize his salary, they’ll be other options for him,” ESPN’s Dave McMenamin said.
James is in the final year of his $101 million deal. The Lakers may want him back, but with Austin Reaves, Luka Dončić, and potentially James all factoring into the payroll, creating financial flexibility will be a challenge.
Perhaps the team’s strong finish to the season will reinforce how successful they can be together and influence his decision to stay. However, the Lakers are unlikely to offer a massive deal, especially with Dončić clearly established as the face of the franchise.
