The Los Angeles Lakers have designated Washington Wizards center Jonas Valanciunas as a mid-to-low trade target, according to Jovan BuhaValanciunas just left his former team, the New Orleans Pelicans, for the Wizards this offseason.
Valanciunas is a good center, but he’s nothing special. Last season, he averaged 12 points, nine rebounds, two assists and almost a block per game. He’s also an efficient interior scorer, shooting 61 percent from the field.
Currently, his status with the Wizards means he’s not looking to compete for the playoffs. He was paid well, with a three-year, $30 million contract. For what he brings, it’s a very good deal.
As for the Lakers’ interest, they likely want him so they can pair him with Anthony Davis and put Davis back in his original position, power forward. The Lakers are also looking ahead to the post-LeBron James era, so signing new role players to build around Davis and the next superstar they acquire is a good plan.
Whether or not the Lakers select Valanciunas really depends on how he performs with the Wizards. If he performs well, there’s a good chance they’ll try to trade him.
