dancing for the devil Subject Miranda Derrick talks about the negative consequences of the shocking Netflix documentary has had on his life and family since its premiere in May.
In a vulnerable video shared on his Instagram Yesterday (June 10), Derrick, who was not involved in the documentary series, revealed: “Before this documentary, my husband and I felt safe. Now that this documentary is out, we feel like our lives have been in danger. We were both followed in our cars, we received hate mail, death threats, people sent us messages to commit suicide and we were harassed.”
He added: “Someone said, ‘If I see you on the street, I’ll come looking for you, so you better be safe.’ Someone also said, ‘If I see you walking on the sidewalk, I’m going to come and put you in the trunk of my car.'”
The docuseries tells the story of how Derrick became estranged from her family after she moved to Los Angeles and signed with 7M, a church-affiliated management company, 7M Films. The series claims that dancers working with the company were encouraged to stop talking to their loved ones, while also donating much of their earnings to the church.
Derrick currently lives with her husband, James “BDash” Derrick, who was also a member of 7M. Miranda pointedly called her family estranged from her and noted that the docuseries may have further jeopardized her relationship.
“I don’t understand how my parents and sister thought this documentary would help me or our relationship in any way,” she said in the video.
“I have been meeting with my family for the last few years, privately, to work on our relationship, to fix things, to repair what has been broken,” he said. “I love being together, laughing and just enjoying each other’s company. And this documentary has made it very difficult to continue doing that.”
Miranda previously closed the claims raised in dancing for the devil, saying: “I’m just a woman living my life. “I am not a victim, I am not harmed, I am not being abused.”
Dancing for the devil: the 7M TikTok cult tells the shocking story of how the Los Angeles management company isolated a group of TikTok dancers, controlled their careers, and convinced them to abandon their families under the leadership of 7M CEO Robert Shinn.
The management company is believed to be an extension of the invitation-only Shekinah Church, where Shinn has been a pastor for decades. Shinn was accused of displaying controlling behavior over clients and members in the docu-series.
Shinn is currently facing a lawsuit from former dancers who accuse him of “brainwashing, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, manipulation and exploitation.”
dancing for the devil is streaming now on Netflix.
