The Dallas Mavericks have almost overcome the chaos of this season, albeit worse for wear. After trading Luka Doncic at the trade deadline, Mavs fans were calling for the head of Nico Harrison, who was considered to be the mastermind of the trade, and it looked like the fans were going to get what they wanted after recent firings made the perfect precedent.
However, former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas thinks that Harrison shouldn’t get all the blame, however. Arenas believes that this was a whole organizational effort to trade Doncic, and Harrison was just the scapegoat.
“The fact Nico [Harrison] still has his job, let’s you know it had nothing to do with Nico. He just the one that gets punished for it. You can’t really throw dirt on his name, obviously, he’s just the middleman here. Everybody who needed to know, knew. Jason Kidd, Nico, the [Mavericks] owners, Lakers, [Rob] Pelinka, the [Lakers] owner, J.J. Redick.”
Arenas also jokingly threw in LeBron James, who’s been known to for having a say on the state of the roster he’s on. At the same time, considering James’ feelings on the matter would be important as well.
“Along with one of the 15 [on the roster], one of them knew. Because at the end of the day, you still have LeBron there, and the player has to mesh with him. Obviously LeBron has an option out, so you don’t want to piss him off, then he’d opt out, then you did this trade and he’s gone. Whoever needed to know that was important enough to know, knew.”
After the trade, the Mavs are barely making it to the Play-In Tournament. Before it, they were serious contenders. So while calling for Harrison to be fired seems like the easy fix, fans might need to look closer into the workings of the Dallas organization.
