The Golden State Warriors are desperate to keep winning, to keep competing for NBA titles with all-time 3-point king Stephen Curry on the roster.
But an update Friday from a respected NBA insider could blow up those plans in the next year.
During a discussion with Brian Windhorst and Anthony Slater on “The Hoop Collective,” ESPN’s Vince Goodwill casually said that he thinks Curry will retire after the 2026-27 season, in a development that would bring down the curtain on this golden era in Golden State.
It started when Slater said he would be “stunned” if Curry were on the United States men’s basketball team for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. And as something of an aside, Goodwill responded to that assertion by predicting that Curry would hang up his sneakers and end his legendary career in 2027.
“That’s a story for another day,” Goodwill said.

The cryptic prediction would run counter to Curry’s recent proclamation to People magazine, in which he said he wasn’t planning to retire “anytime soon.”
Things change, though.
The Warriors are not likely to advance beyond the first round of the Western Conference playoffs this year, and Golden State’s ability to extend its mid-2010s dynasty into the coming seasons will be determined by whether they can convince another superstar — like Giannis Antetokounmpo — to join them this summer.
Eventually, the tap runs dry. Maybe Curry knows that, on some level, and is planning accordingly behind the scenes when his contract expires after next season.
