For all but first-round picks, the NBA Summer League is about making a name for themselves. Heat guard Alondes Williams did just that with a surprising moment on Wednesday.
Williams’ spectacular dunk in the fourth quarter of Miami’s 92-79 victory over the Dallas Mavericks fired up the crowd and fired up the Heat bench, sending nearly everyone into a frenzy.
Mavericks guard AJ Lawson was lucky to get out of the way. He nearly got a poster (and arguably still does), but Lawson at least avoided the brunt of Williams’ force and quickly got the ball out of the way to put the moment behind him.
The Heat have been known to develop under-the-radar players into NBA rotation pieces. Could Williams’ athleticism come soon to Miami?

Lawson managed to get out of Williams’ way as quickly as he could, but the Mavericks never recovered from the blow. Dallas was outscored 25-15 the rest of the way, and the Heat won by a comfortable 13-point margin. Williams finished with nine points, three rebounds and five assists.

Summer League is often seen as a showcase for some of the NBA’s top rookies, and in many cases, it is. Heat first-round pick Kel’el Ware finished Wednesday’s win with 24 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, giving Miami fans a taste of what could be to come.
But for many players, it’s the best chance they’ll ever have to prove they deserve a shot in the NBA. That’s the situation Williams finds himself in as he enters his third season out of college.

Who is Alondes Williams?
Williams went undrafted in 2022 out of Wake Forest. He began his college career at the community college level before joining Oklahoma and then transferring to the Demon Deacons.
He spent the 2022-23 season in the G League with the Long Island Nets, appearing in one game with the Brooklyn Nets, and took on a prominent role with the Heat’s Sioux Falls Skyforce affiliate last season. Williams also appeared briefly in seven games with the Heat.

One dunk won’t convince a team to give Williams a shot in the NBA, but the 25-year-old guard’s improvement at the G League level last season and his penchant for highlight-reel plays could get him closer to that goal.
