New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is facing criticism from almost every side.
The numbers from his Week 1 outing against the Minnesota Vikings were worse than they appeared — to those who dared to look.
It’s gotten to the point where even opposing players are expressing pity for the struggles and subsequent treatment of the sixth-year quarterback.
However, the Giants are keeping Jones as their starting quarterback for now as they prepare for the game against the Washington Commanders.
By suggesting ways for Week 1 losing teams to avoid a 0-2 start, Alex Kay of Bleacher Report urged the Giants to bench Jones.
“The New York Giants seem desperate with Daniel Jones at the helm. After an embarrassing home loss to a Sam Darnold-led Vikings team, the G-Men are now 22-37-1 in games the point guard has started,” Kay wrote. “It’s time for Drew Lock to take over and give the team a chance to play better football.”
Kay probably isn’t the only analyst who thinks this is the right move for the Giants. Fans are likely to lean that way sooner or later.
We could very well reach that tipping point later in the season if Jones continues to struggle. The Giants simply cannot compete at the level they need to if he plays like he did in Week 1.
Putting Drew Lock at center probably isn’t a great idea. He’s a solid quarterback and a potential starter, but he hasn’t done much in his career to prove he’s a major upgrade for the season overall.
Regardless, it’s ultimately up to Jones to prevent the Giants from replacing him before the end of the season.
