NFL Pick’em Week 2: How to Identify Value Picks
Making accurate predictions is only part of the strategy for improving your odds in a football bet. It’s not particularly difficult either, as point spreads offer a quick and accurate assessment of each team’s probability of winning. Few people can consistently surprise Vegas odds over the long term.
The real advantage of pick’em pools lies in the effective application of game theory, as you only advance in your pool ranking by scoring points that your opponents miss. This means that the optimal selection strategy involves predicting the popularity of picks, in other words, anticipating how your opponents will pick each matchup.
Once you understand each team’s odds of winning and the expected popularity of the picks, two basic tactics should help you begin to generate long-term success in football pick’em pools:
- Look for unpopular choices that might be worth a calculated gamble.
- Avoid following the crowd by choosing the trendy surprises of the week.
The picks below offer some of the best opportunities to differentiate your 2024 Week 2 picks from your contest opponents with little to no additional risk. In a season-long pick’em pool, you almost certainly shouldn’t pick all five (especially surprise picks) because it would be too risky overall. But they’re all worth considering in certain situations.

NFL Pick’em Week 2: Top Picks and Analysis
Indianapolis Colts (at the Packers)
Point difference: -3
Popularity of choice: 60%
Category: Value Favorite
Packers QB Jordan Love is expected to miss the game after suffering a knee injury late in the loss to the Eagles. As a result, the Packers are expected to play Malik Willis, a quarterback with three career starts who has never thrown a touchdown pass so far in his career. Willis has struggled to focus in the pocket (with an 18% sack rate) and has completed just over half of his pass attempts.
The Colts have moved from underdog to favorite because of the quarterback situation, though public support for the Colts has been somewhat cautious. The other four favorites within a half-point of the Colts have an average popularity of 77% this week, making the Colts the best choice in this range.
Denver Broncos (vs. Steelers)
Point difference: +3
Popularity of choice: 22%
Category: Value Gamble in Weekly Prize Pools
Pittsburgh won as an underdog in Atlanta without a touchdown, relying on six field goals and a +3 turnover margin. Meanwhile, Denver rookie Bo Nix struggled in his first start in Seattle, averaging just 3.3 yards per attempt and two interceptions. As a result, the Steelers have become a popular away favorite.
Russell Wilson’s status for this week remains uncertain, but regardless, Pittsburgh appears to have a below-average offense and is playing its second straight away game.
Our models favor the Broncos relative to their market odds. Given their low popularity and public reaction, this looks like a value bet to consider in weekly betting.

Arizona Cardinals (vs. Los Angeles Rams)
Point difference: -1
Popularity of choice: 34%
Category: Unpopular coin toss game
The Rams dealt with injuries on their offensive line Sunday night and lost WR Puka Nacua. The early line movements made Arizona the favorite in this game, but the crowd continues to back the Rams at a nearly two-to-one ratio.
That makes Arizona a solid value pick in what oddsmakers consider the closest game of the week.
New York Giants (at Commanders)
Point difference: +1.5
Popularity of choice: 23%
Category: Value Gamble in Weekly Prize Pools
The Giants struggled in Week 1, managing to score just 6 points on 240 yards of total offense, resulting in the worst yards-per-point ratio of the week. The silver lining is that teams with such poor performances in Week 1 have historically been good underdog values in Week 2.
Washington’s defense was dismantled by Tampa Bay, giving up points on every drive except the final knee of the possession. This comes after a season where they ranked last in the league in points allowed. Despite Washington’s public popularity, the line dropped by one point on Tuesday.
Detroit Lions (vs. Tampa Bay)
Point gap: -7
Popularity: 88%
Category: Reasonably Priced Favorite
It’s not that Detroit is an unpopular choice: 88% of the poll still backs them to beat Tampa Bay. However, six other teams with lower odds of winning are also picked by at least 85% of the public.
When multiple teams with similar popularity have lower chances of winning, the best strategy is to stick with the favorite that has the best chances of the group. If you are in a trusted group, consider assigning them a relatively higher trust point value.
