Basketball at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will begin on Saturday, July 27.

Both the men’s and women’s tournaments will begin on the same day, with 12 countries on each side vying for a gold medal.

The United States is favored to win on both counts, with superstars LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant leading the men’s team and A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart and Diana Taurasi leading the women’s team.

As the group stage gets underway, The Jugo Mobile brings you all the details you need to know about how the Olympic basketball tournament format works below.

Olympic basketball tournament format explained

In both the men’s and women’s tournaments, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will feature the participation of 12 countries divided into groups of four.

Each team will play against the other three countries in its group. The first and second-place teams in each group and the two best third-place teams will advance to the eight-team knockout round.

Quarter-final matches will be determined by a draw based on the standings. Teams from the same group cannot play each other in the first round of the knockout phase.

Once those matchups are set, a standard single-elimination system will be played to win the gold medal.
