One Piece fans have just found the perfect place to grab a bite to eat, but their excitement comes with some reservations.
Over the past 27 years, One Piece has become a force of nature. Eiichiro Oda’s manga, which follows Luffy and the Straw Hats on their quest for the eponymous treasure, has given us one of the best anime of all time (with some of the best animated movies to boot), not to mention one of the longest.
It’s a staple of pop culture, so much so that we’re seeing more and more references around the world. Olympic athletes are taking inspiration from the franchise, the Las Vegas Sphere was part of the anniversary celebrations, and there’s even a Joyboy caterer.
Yes, eagle-eyed fans have managed to spot a restaurant clearly inspired by the first Shonen anime set on the sea. The place is called Joyboy and features a drawing of Luffy in the logo, enough to catch the attention of any devoted fan.
While people appreciate the references, there’s one particular problem: the caterer is in New York City, specifically Greenfield, Brooklyn. It’s not a neighborhood that most people have access to, and that’s met with some cynicism from fans in general.
“Phew, but you have to go to Brooklyn. Gentrification has helped, but I’d still rather not go,” reads one comment. “Cheesy restaurant,” says another.
Some people are immediately excited about the idea, especially if the menu is themed. “Do they have a sandwich without bread? It’s like the Jimmy John’s cheese sandwich,” one Reddit user asks. “No fish served like the owner requested,” another jokes.
This looks like a cool place to eat, though it’s unclear if the One Piece celebration extends beyond the facade. So if you’re in the New York or Brooklyn area, stop by next time you’re feeling peckish. Who knows, it might be your next adventure on the high seas.
