Steven DeKnight – who oversaw the first season of Daredevil on Netflix – has responded to criticism of the action in his series, blaming budgets for the lack of computer-generated acrobatics.
Daredevil started small-screen life on Netflix, where the show ran for three seasons, with Spartacus mastermind Steven DeKnight overseeing the first.
Recently, Matt Murdock made the move to Disney+, in a new iteration that has received rave reviews for some spectacular fight sequences, with Jugo Mobile spotlighting “the goriest and greatest action scene in the whole franchise to date” in our Daredevil: Born Again review.
But comparisons between old and new on social media have prompted DeKnight to respond.
Steven DeKnight blames “financial issue” for lack of Daredevil CGI
A Marvel fan took to Twitter/X to post a compilation of Daredevil clips from She-Hulk and Born Again, below the words: “Crazy how Daredevil started becoming more agile and acrobatic/moving more like comic Daredevil ever since he got into the MCU.”
Steven DeKnight retweeted that message with the explanation that it was “purely a financial issue. On the Netflix show, we didn’t have the money to do this. If we had, we would have.”
In a separate message, DeKnight wrote: “Very proud of the work the team did with the resources we had,” before qualifying his statements about that work.
DeKnight: “Just to be clear, in no way, shape, or form were my comments regarding Daredevil a knock against Netflix. It was merely explaining that I would have used CGI to enhance fights like in Born Again if the budget has been larger. That’s not to say we didn’t have the money to make the show we wanted to make. It was tight but it always is.”
