Created by Brian Watkins and directed by Charles Murray during its second season, Outer range is, on one level, the story of two rival ranching families: the down-and-out Abbotts, led by grandparents Royal (Josh Brolin) and Cecilia (Lili Taylor), and the ultra-wealthy Tillersons, led by certified madman Wayne Tillerson (Will Patton). ). But there’s more to this family feud beneath the surface, literally. Thanks to the mind-altering and time-warping properties of a mysterious mineral found underground in Royal’s lands, a large round black hole in space-time occasionally appears in his western pasture. Ah, good question! After spending the season trapped in the past before his parents got together, Perry is thrown back into the hole by the version of his father from that time, Royal. Perry arrives not in the present, but a few weeks before the present, specifically the period of the first episode of the series. Recognizing the date and time, he races to stop his younger self from accidentally fighting and killing Trevor Tillerson and creating the whole mess in the first place. Instead, the distraction he creates allows him Trevor accidentally kill Perry.
Tillerson flees, leaving the current Perry (who is not erased from the timeline, Return to the future style, when his previous self dies) to dispose of his own corpse and then take his own place as the Perry of that time period. He seems to have fooled everyone except his time-traveling companion Royal, who views him suspiciously.

Autumn is there recovering from the bullet that Royal’s time traveling companion Joy put in Autumn while she was unsuccessfully trying to save Amy at Royal’s request. Instead of blaming Joy, Royal teams up with her to prevent the dystopian future the hole shows him, ruled by Autumn and her yellow-clad cult, from coming true.

The sci-fi element of this story isn’t a time-warping black hole at all, you know? The most generous reading one can give. Outer range is that it’s a story about the inescapability of small towns: small town people, small town life, small town thinking. Royal, Cece, Wayne, and their children are effectively trapped in Wabang: Royal and Cece by family ties and poverty, Wayne by mania and greed. Rhett and Maria try to flee, but they plot a course through the city at the first obstacle. (Of course, the first obstacle was a time-traveling herd of bison, but still.) Perry has fallen through the time portal twice and still ends up back at the Abbott family ranch each time. Even Autumn, the wildest and most traveled character, is ultimately a refugee returning to the only place where she can truly find herself: her home. The challenge facing the program is the one you and I discussed earlier: many things occur in Outer rangebut not enough happens. With a few exceptions, most involving Perry, season 2 did not move forward. any of its greatest mysteries nor answer any of its greatest questions. This is an extremely dangerous game for a mystery box show to play with its viewers.
