The Seattle Seahawks are in the market for a cornerback in free agency.
We know that because the team met with free agent and former Buffalo Bills cornerback, Rasul Douglas, and former Seahawk Shaquill Griffin in May.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Brady Henderson also revealed that the Seahawks are “looking for veteran corner help.”.
The Seahawks have Riq Woolen for one boundary spot and Devon Witherspoon in the slot, but the other starting spot opposite Woolen, which currently has Josh Jobe penciled in, remains a big concern, which means the Seahawks could use another starter, or at least more depth to compete.
NFL Trade Rumors’ Logan Ulrich thinks former Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. could be the guy the Seahawks ultimately bring in.
“The Seahawks have been poking around the free agent cornerback market to add competition or an upgrade for Josh Jobe, whose spot as the No. 2 starting outside corner is written lightly in pencil,” Ulrich wrote.
“They’ve shown more interest in bigger players with scheme familiarity like Rasul Douglas and Shaquill Griffin, but Samuel could also be an interesting fit.”
Samuel proved to be a solid starter over his first three years in the NFL, but his 2024 campaign was marred by injury, limiting him to just four games.
Fowler reported back in May that Samuel had to undergo neck surgery in April and was waiting for that to heal before signing with a team. The expectation is that Samuel will sign somewhere after a check-up in early July.
Samuel would be an ideal fit for Seattle on the outside. He’s still young enough (26 in October) that he’s got upside and could prove to be a long-term solution. Samuel is also far more proven than Jobe, seeing as how he’s got 47 career starts as compared to Jobe’s nine.
Seeing as how he’s coming off an injury-plagued season and is signing late in free agency, Samuel will likely garner a one-year prove-it deal as opposed to the four-year, $45 million contract Spotrac has projected for him.
With a need at cornerback, and with very little risk in bringing in Samuel on a one-year deal that should be reasonably priced, it makes a ton of sense for the Seahawks to take a swing on the former second-round pick.
