After months of speculation, Sony has finally announced the PlayStation 5 Pro, capping off its tech showcase with a massive, explosive price reveal.
The PS5 Pro is supposed to be the most advanced console Sony has ever produced. The system aims to bring Fidelity and Performance modes closer together, if not completely eliminate them, thanks to its upgraded GPU, advanced ray-tracing capabilities, and an AI upscaler that improves existing image quality without losing frame rate speed.
The PlayStation 5 Pro was unveiled during a technical presentation hosted by Mark Cerny, broadcast on the official channel PlayStation YouTube channel. All the features of the console were presented, as well as a release date of November 7th, with pre-orders opening on September 26th.
In addition to sharing the specs, Sony has revealed the price of the new console, which comes in at $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY. It’s worth noting, however, that this is a digital edition only, as you’ll need to purchase a separate disc drive to use physical media.
Fans expected the PS5 Pro to be more expensive than existing models, but this is a particularly steep price for such an upgrade. As such, fans will need to keep the price in mind if they want to invest, especially with the need to purchase the disc drive for any existing games they might own.
Sony has had an up-and-down year, with Astro Bot’s critical success following Concord’s swift demise. It remains to be seen how fans will react to the PS5 Pro’s higher-than-expected retail price, especially after the nightmare many people experienced in 2020 when the first PS5 launched and it was nearly impossible to buy a console.
