Fortnite’s voice chat feature has traditionally been a two-edged sword, encouraging community while also increasing toxicity. Players commonly describe aggressive interactions, including trash talking and using insulting language, especially in competitive lobbies.

Despite Epic’s efforts to address this issue with AI-driven moderation, mature language filters, and reporting mechanisms, concerns persist about the game’s young player base being exposed to inappropriate behavior. Recent improvements to text chat have exacerbated these issues, with unfiltered global and party chats raising concerns about greater abuse.

Now, trusted leakers recently discovered files indicating that Proximity Chat is set to debut in Battle Royale for Chapter 6 Season 4, with an optional toggle to enable or disable it. Here’s when you can expect it.

Fortnite Proximity Chat Battle Royale Release Window and Rumors

After tremendous success in UEFN, Proximity Chat seems to be making its way in Fortnite soon. While no official release date has surfaced, insiders speculate a launch could align with Chapter 7, expected in early December 2025, as Epic often pairs major updates with new seasons or chapters to maximize impact.

The lack of a confirmed release date matches Epic’s gradual approach to feature rollouts. Development sometimes precedes launches by months, and recent downtime discoveries indicate that Proximity Chat is still in testing.

Some players hope for an earlier release inside Chapter 6, possibly as a mid-season surprise, but others warn that it may be deferred until Chapter 7 to guarantee effective moderation measures are in place.

If you’re unaware, the v30.40 update brought Proximity Chat to Fortnite’s UEFN mode, which allows players to hear adjacent teammates and opponents in real time. It has proven popular for its strategic depth and chaotic enjoyment, reminiscent of viral moments in games such as Warzone. However, it has also sparked concerns about rising toxicity, as unmoderated voice chats may intensify negative exchanges.
