Resident Evil 9 has been announced at Summer Game Fest in a shock end reveal after being teased halfway through the stream.
After the success of Resident Evil Village and the remake of Resident Evil 4, a Resident Evil 9 felt inevitable. Now, Capcom has finally shown off the upcoming game.
While the Resident Evil Village DLC gave us closure on various story threads, plenty more could be addressed in Resident Evil 9. Below, we’ll compile everything we know about the horror sequel. Be warned, spoilers for previous Resident Evil games lurk within.

Resident Evil Requiem release date
As announced in Summer Game Fest 2025, Resident Evil Requiem will release on February 27, 2026, and will be coming to all new-gen consoles and PC.
This will tie in with the 30th celebration for the franchise.
Resident Evil 30th anniversary announcement
During Summer Game Fest, Capcom revealed that they’re having a 30th celebration for Resident Evil in March, where they’re likely to announce the “latest Resident Evil game you’ve all been waiting for.”

“Bear with us a little longer, just a blink of an eye more, and it’ll be ready,” revealed Capcom during the event. However, this was purely a ruse, as the game was announced at the end of the stream.
Setting & Story
Story
The adventure will likely be focusing on a protagonist named Grace Ashcroft, the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, from Resident Evil Outbreak. Though fans previously assumed it would be Rose Winters.
Thanks to the trailer, we see her as a technical analyst FBI agent, discovering mysterious deaths linked to an unidentified disease. Bodies have been discovered in an abandoned government office. It appears she’s investigating these deaths, which takes her to the crime scene, where it’s assumed her mother was murdered.

Setting
Most notably, it seems we’ll be returning to the police station seen in Resident Evil 2 Remake, the Raccoon Police Station. As such, this suggests the setting will primarily be in the fictional mountain city in the Midwest many know and love.

The setting seems the perfect amount of creepy, featuring rainy streets, haunted houses, and plenty of destroyed cities and apocalyptic locations.
Dusk Golem has claimed that the game may be an open-world horror adventure. It was initially thought that an open-world Resident Evil had been delayed, but since then, Dusk Golem has said that the open-world Resident Evil and Resident Evil Requiem are the same.

The insider states that Resident Evil Requiem will be set in a “fictional rural town on an island in the Southeast Asia Sea” and will be based in Singapore. Resident Evil has utilized islands as settings before, most notably in Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Revelations 2, part of RE4, and in spin-off media.
Gameplay
During Summer Game Fest, it was revealed that Resident Evil Requiem “isn’t just about survival horror, expect high-stakes action too.”
That’s all we currently have for gameplay, as there’s yet to be any gameplay footage. However, it looks to be a lot more intense in its pace than previous Resident Evil games.
