The NBA 2K League is at a crossroads, currently on hiatus after six years of competition.
In its current format, which has seen the world’s best NBA 2K players compete in 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 competition with up to $2 million in prize money on the line, the NBA 2K League has seen solid expansion and growth in its early years.
Launched in 2018 with 17 teams, each affiliated with NBA teams, the NBA 2K League is the first official esports league operated by a U.S. professional sports league and now has 25 teams, including three foreign teams: The Gen.G Tigers (China), DUX Infinitos (Mexico) and NBL Oz Gaming (Australia).
In 2024, the NBA’s joint venture with NBA 2K owner Take-Two Interactive is undergoing a strategic overhaul. The league announced in July that it was “reimagining the NBA 2K League as a global digital entertainment company.”
So what exactly does this mean?

Leveraging social media influencers/creators, NBA and WNBA athletes and celebrities, the new NBA 2K League is intended to engage a younger audience by focusing on social media as a means to broaden the scope of fans who interact with both the game and the league itself.
“I’m really excited about it,” Ronnie 2K, 2K Games’ director of digital marketing, told The Jugo Mobile.
“I don’t have anything to share, but I know they are working with great enthusiasm on the next phase of this project, and I am delighted for them.
“I think finding that balance between competition and entertainment, and expanding the community network around 2K, like what we’ve done with the brand to bring that to the 2K League, is really exciting.”
While 2K is remaining tight-lipped on the exact details of what the 2025 season will look like, expect some updates on the new league in the coming months.
