The Warriors signed Stephen Curry through at least the 2026-27 season, but haven’t been able to do much else this offseason. They appear to be one quality point away from becoming a contender, but there appears to be some uncertainty about their current direction.
Rumors are circulating that they might be interested in a trade for Jimmy Butler, but at what cost?
“They’re like those rock and roll bands that are always on tour. They still have their lead singer, and he can still play at a high level. But they’re not the same band they used to be, and they haven’t had a hit in a few years.” an anonymous coach told Heavy Sports.
If the goal is to win a title, being a rock ‘n’ roll band on the hill is not what the Warriors should want to be compared to. Steph Curry can still do it, as he showed at the Paris Summer Olympics, but other than the two-time NBA MVP, this doesn’t look like a championship team.
The franchise could well try to sign a player like Butler, but it seems so determined to keep Jonathan Kuminga that a deal seems unlikely at the moment.
“The championship they won against Boston now feels like a lifetime achievement award. They had the experience and the professionalism, and Boston wasn’t ready for that yet,” the anonymous coach said.
If Golden State can pull off one last hurrah and make another deep playoff run, it would be almost surprising at this point, which is shocking considering their success over the past decade.
They may still have a trick up their sleeve, but it’s not a good idea when an anonymous source is calling them, behind their backs, the fallen Rolling Stones.
