The Philadelphia 76ers were expected to land a superstar this summer thanks to their large salary cap space, landing forward Paul George on a four-year, $212 million contract.
George wasn’t the only star in the running for that spot, as former Chicago Bull DeMar DeRozan was also looking for a new organization. landed with the Sacramento Kings via a sign-and-trade deal but revealed that the Sixers were another preferred landing spot.
He revealed his list of potential summer destinations in a recent podcast with George.
“I was thinking about Philly,” DeRozan said. “Philly was definitely an option. The Lakers were always an option, and the Clippers were an option. The Heat were an option. I would say those teams were definitely real, personal, legitimate options that I was considering.”
While it’s too early to tell, it’s a safe bet that Philadelphia’s management made the right choice. DeRozan and George are past their prime, but the former Los Angeles Clippers wing offers far superior two-way shooting and long-range shooting. George is a Four-time All-Defensive player who shot 41.3 percent from beyond the arc last season while DeRozan only managed to knock down 33.3 percent of his shots after a limited number of attempts..
DeRozan, however, is an ideal acquisition for the Kings. Sacramento didn’t need another ball-dominant scorer. Instead, they gained a reliable veteran who can score when needed. Meanwhile, George looks to complement the Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey tandem as each looks to win their first career championship.
