Spain’s quest for a second World Cup continues with an all-European quarterfinal clash against an improving Belgium side.
La Roja had Mikel Merino’s latest clutch goal to thank for a very dramatic 1-0 win over Iberian neighbors Portugal that sees them remarkably in the last eight for the first time since winning the trophy in 2010.
Unai Simon’s latest shutout knocked Cristiano Ronaldo out of his final World Cup but also made it five clean sheets in a row to start the tournament, which is a new record.
The Belgians will fancy themselves as the side to end that run, having stuck four past co-hosts America in a dominant win that made a mockery of the Folarin Balogun scandal.
It’s a side suddenly full of goals with 12 in its last three and is looking to make a second semifinal after its heroics of 2018.
Spain vs. Belgium prediction
Spain is the favorite for this one as it looks to follow up its European Championship win with World Cup success just as it did in 2010.
It is unlikely to be an easy game against an in-form Belgian side, particularly with both sides and sets of players knowing each other so well from international and club battles.
We think Spain’s superior talent and know-how will just see it squeeze over the line into just its second-ever semifinal.
Prediction: Spain 2, Belgium 1

Spain vs. Belgium best bets
Both teams to score (-122 at FanDuel)
With a 2-1 scoreline, this is an obvious place to start but not an obvious pick given Spain’s incredible defensive record.
Unai Simon has not conceded a World Cup goal in 609 minutes and kept five clean sheets to start the tournament. Both are records and he and his back four will be looking to continue that streak.
Belgium has been on fire in front of goal of late, though, with 12 in its last three and has firepower across its frontline as well on its bench. FanDuel has the best odds for this bet.
Over 2.5 goals (-115 at DraftKings)
Our next stop is also an obvious one but another worthwhile one with goals our tip at both ends.
Even with Lamine Yamal not yet at full fitness and Nico Williams currently still missing, the European champions put three past Austria and four past Saudi Arabia. Its other two wins (Uruguay, Portugal) have been by one goal, but expect them to score here.
Belgium’s newly-found prowess is quite something. Having scored just once in its opening two games, the Red Devils have 12 in their last three, more than any other side.
Lamine Yamal to score anytime (+150 at bet365)
Spain’s back five have been its standout performers, but if they are to win the World Cup, they need Yamal to get fully fit and into full form.
He scored against the Saudis but has yet to truly have his moment at this tournament. Based off his brilliance at the EUROs and for Barcelona, it is surely a matter of time. He has had at least two shots on target in three of his last four competitive internationals.
Could he be the hero in this quarter-final?
