Pat Riley has been a pivotal part of the Miami Heat organization since being named head coach and president in 1995. While he has long retired from his duties on the sideline, he has remained in complete control of basketball operations.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer is considered to be one of the greatest basketball minds in league history. Since making his debut as a player in 1967-68, he has been involved in 19 of 57, or 33.3%, NBA Finals as either a player, coach or executive. That number rises to an even more impressive 37.8% ,or 17 out of 45, since he began his coaching career as an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979-80.
Despite his legendary status — and Miami making the NBA Finals twice in the previous five seasons– the 2024-25 season has led to plenty of backlash for Riley. Between the Jimmy Butler drama that culminated in him being shipped to the Golden State Warriors and reports that his micromanaging may have ran LeBron James out of town in 2014, some portion of Heat fans have begun to view their long-time executive in a different light.
His lack of moves to upgrade the roster around Butler, prior to the star asking for a trade, has drawn plenty of scrutiny, in particular. Meanwhile, Miami was swept in the opening round of the postseason by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The series ended with a 55-point loss on their home floor in Game 4. Meanwhile, they were outscored by 122 points in the four games, setting an NBA record for the most lopsided series in postseason history.

Stephen A. Smith recently made the case that it is time for the franchise to move on from Riley. Speaking on ESPN’s First Take, the sports media personality stated:
“Change has to start with Pat Riley. It’s time. It’s time. You have never heard anyone say that about the great Pat Riley, who I revere. I know this man, I got a lot of love for this man. I appreciate what he has done for the game of basketball. I don’t have any doubt that he knows what he’s doing when it comes to basketball, in terms of what the team needs, the coach it has, etc.,” Smith stated on Tuesday. “The reason I’m bringing up that there has to be a change in Miami is because you have to get people to want to come to Miami and he’s not that guy anymore. Not that guy.”
Smith claimed that Riley no longer has the ability to lure the right players to join the Heat organization. He suggested that head coach Erik Spoelstra should be promoted to the role of president of basketball operations.
Riley, who turned 80 years old last month, has shown no desire to retire anytime soon. Meanwhile, Bam Adebayo put the locker room on notice following their season-ending loss, claiming that Riley will make a lot of changes this summer.
