Out of the dark (now on Paramount+ with Showtime) proves that we’ve come a long way since Raquel Welch wore a fur bikini. Director andres cummingThe film’s first feature-length film is a hominid thriller that strives to achieve a level of authenticity befitting its 45,000-year-old setting. Consciously or not, the filmmaker, by shooting on locations in the primordial-looking Scottish highlands and inventing a specific language for the film, reflects another milestone in the Neanderthal subgenre, 1981. In search of fire Although Cumming puts more clothes on his characters and less emphasis on the disturbing simian sexy moments between primitive man and woman. He also differentiates the work by framing the drama as a what-the-hell-is-beyond-the-edge-of-the-firelight horror, with highly effective results.
OUT OF THE DARKNESS: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
The essence: The circumference of the firelight is approximately Yeah big. How far until the darkness threatens to swallow you? Maybe 10 feet? Well, within this space, six humans sit. It is a tense space. They are isolated from their kind. In a sterile hell. Cold. Hungry. Angry. Adem (Chuku Modu) is their leader. He led them to this rocky, windswept place, where no seed will find its place? Yes. Where no seed will find its purchase, seeking an abundance of warm caves and herds of animals to hunt. His promise has not yet been fulfilled. Ave (Iola Evans) is worried about Adem’s fetus. Geirr (Kit Young) is Adem’s younger brother, the second in command. Heron (Luna Mwezi) is Adem’s pre-teen son. Odal (Arno Leuning) is an old man, doctor or mystic. And finally, there’s Beyah (Safia Oakley-Green). She is a “stray”. She doesn’t belong. She eats last, when there is food.
The camera is deep in the darkness with the fire in the background and in the foreground a shape crosses the frame. We see it, but these prehistoric wanderers don’t. What is it? I’m not sure. Is it earthly or…? other? Again, I’m not sure. It depends on the type of movie it is.
The next day, the group continues their nomadic journey. Adem and Geirr’s search is fruitless although they find blood on the rocks along with a large set of bones. They keep it a secret from others. At night, the group hears noises in the dark in the distance. Screams and howls. During the day, they fight through the fog and see a deep forest ahead of them and Adem says that they will not go through it, but around it. Perhaps his wisest decision yet? Beyah touches the blood on her pants between her legs and Ave reassures her: at least Beyah will be useful to Adem now, where she was expendable before. Go ahead; Fighting bird; Odal says that she and the child inside will die if they don’t eat soon.
One night so hungry by the fire they hear infernal screams from the blackness. Something grabs Heron and carries him screaming into the darkness and a fiery Adem chases him into the depths of the forest. She is his son. She is his son. The sounds are horrible. After a moment, Geirr reluctantly follows his brother. Odal is furious. He says he knows what’s happening: Beyah is bleeding. She is “in heat.” The demon out there feels it. She will have to be sacrificed to save the others. Isn’t that like a man?
What movies will it remind you of?: Out of the dark is similar to Robert Eggers directing a In search of fire Redo. And with the crafty young female lead and the existential horror of Whatever in the Woods, it’s very reminiscent of 2022. Predator cleave Prey.TO
Performance worth seeing: Is Beyah giving us Final Girl vibes? HE’S NOT SAYING. But Oakley-Green shows here the toughness and confidence that she tells us that she is ripe to be chosen as a Jedi and ruined by Star Wars – or more preferably appear on a radical indie A24 and show us their range.
Memorable dialogue: Odal: “The danger of bringing light to a dark place is that you might discover what lives in the darkness.”

Our opinion: It is tempting to label prehistoric stories as Out of the dark tricks, but Cumming mostly cuts the wow-that-authentic components of your film (and therefore the temptation to find fault with them), with great ideas. It’s an ingenious approach: it sticks to Beyah’s point of view, opening the narrative to an exploration of gender and power dynamics (Adem asserts his alpha status directly on Beyah), and opens up questions about why this group of humans separated from the safety of a larger clan (were they exiled, like the family in Eggers? The witch?). What happened to tribalism? As the threat to the group intensifies, it inspires contemplation of the relationship between human nature and war, implying that fear drives us to irrationality and that evil is not born, but born. madeas a social construction.
Cumming’s direction is smart and concise, and the visuals develop the themes of a minimalist story: using mostly natural lighting, employing transitions to convey the characters’ disorientation, creating a beautifully esoteric vibe with a sequence set beneath the eerie glow. of the Northern Lights (imagine seeing those inexplicable phenomena in the sky like a primitive culture) and she effectively uses thunder and lightning to emphasize the drama during the climax. There were moments where removing the embellishments could have made the film more stylistically daring, for example by completely removing the percussion score, which goes CLACKITY CLACKITY CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK during the most intense moments; He considers how suffocating the silence can be when characters huddle around a fire, surrounded by a void. Out of the dark It’s an absolutely safe, terrifying, thoughtful and memorable film when it could have been a perfectly good in-the-moment thriller. But that doesn’t seem to be Cumming’s modus operandi at all.
