Argentina was on the verge of elimination until the defending champions pulled off a magical comeback against Egypt to escape the Round of 16 with a 3-2 victory.

Lionel Messi’s squad had trouble dealing with an Egyptian team that used counterattacks off a strong defense to create offensive chances. It seemed like Egypt had figured out how to slow down Messi and was prepared to pull off a massive upset.

However, Argentina found a few late goals, including Messi’s equalizer in the 83rd minute, completing the latest comeback without extra time in World Cup history.

Facing a two-goal deficit is usually too big for any team to overcome in the World Cup, but Argentina wasn’t fazed by the hole. Not only does Argentina keep its chances at a back-to-back championship alive, it made history in the process.

Here’s where Argentina’s comeback ranks in World Cup history.

Three-goal comebacks

1954: Austria 7-5 Switzerland

Austria’s three-goal comeback over Switzerland in the 1954 quarterfinals was the first time a team had a multi-goal comeback in a World Cup knockout match. Switzerland took a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of action. However, just a few minutes after that third goal, Austria scored three goals in two minutes to even the match, and Austria even had a 4-3 lead at halftime to take full control. In the end, Austria outscored Switzerland 7-2 in the last 70 minutes of action to move on to the next round.

1966: Portugal 5-3 North Korea

The only other three-goal comeback in the World Cup came in the 1966 quarterfinal, when Portugal scored five unanswered goals to defeat North Korea. North Korea scored three goals in the first 28 minutes, but Portugal immediately answered the third goal with the team’s first to not only cut the deficit to 3-1, but halt the momentum as well. Portugal scored once more right before halftime, then dominated the second half with three straight goals to get the win.

Two-goal comebacks

1954: West Germany 3-2 Hungary

Only once in World Cup history has a team overcome a multi-goal deficit to win the match, and it came all the way back in 1954. Hungary scored twice in the first few minutes to take a 2-0 lead, but West Germany bounced back with two goals in the next 10 minutes to tie the game at the 18-minute mark. The two sides played much of the game evenly until West Germany took the lead for good with a goal in the 84th minute.

1982: West Germany 3-3- (5-4 PKs) France

Twenty-eight years later, West Germany executed another two-goal comeback, this time against France in the 1982 semifinal. This match was different than most other comebacks, as it was tied 1-1 through 90 minutes and went to extra time. France scored twice in the first eight minutes of extra time, but West Germany chipped away with two goals before extra time expired, forcing penalty kicks. The PK shootout went six rounds, but West Germany eeked out France 5-4 to advance to the final.

2018: Belgium 3-2 Japan

Belgium’s two-goal comeback over Japan in the 2018 Round of 16 was chaotic in of itself. The two sides were scoreless at halftime and appeared to be playing a low-scoring match, but Japan scored twice in four minutes early in the second half. Belgium then got its first goal at the 69th minute, then five minutes later tied the game at 2-2 with another goal. Belgium secured the win in stoppage time, when the team scored the winning goal right before regulation ended.

2026: Argentina 3-2 Egypt

Argentina made history at the 2026 World Cup with the latest multi-goal comeback without extra time in tournament history. The defending champions were down 2-0 through 78 minutes, but still came back after scoring their first goal at the 79th minute and after Lionel Messi tied the match at the 83rd minute. Argentina then won the game in stoppage time on an Enzo Fernandez goal.

With Lionel Messi having led his nation to a triumphant FIFA World Cup title in 2022, the first of his illustrious career, Argentina will be looking to run it back four years later.

In what is believed to be Messi’s final World Cup tournament, the Albiceleste are hoping to send their all-time great off into the sunset with a defense of their title.

No nation has successfully defended the World Cup with back-to-back championships since Brazil did so in 1962, having won four years prior.

The Jugo Mobile explains Argentina’s route to the 2026 edition of football’s greatest competition, with a look back at the country’s performance across World Cup history.

Have Argentina qualified for World Cup 2026?

Argentina were one of the first teams to officially secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

CONMEBOL was one of the first confederations to wrap up its qualification process, with the final matches taking place on September 9, 2025. Yet the defending champions had long since confirmed their spot at the 2026 tournament, as they had sealed qualification with a 4-1 victory over Brazil way back on March 25.

At the end of the tournament, Argentina sat top of the standings, winning the 18-game round robin by a considerable margin. They won 12 of their matches, drawing two and losing four. Their 38 points put them nine clear of second-placed Ecuador.

Argentina World Cup qualifying results, fixtures

With CONMEBOL qualifying finishing up back in September, there are no more competitive games for Argentina before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Argentina World Cup record

Argentina have won the FIFA World Cup three times in their illustrious football history, with only Brazil (five), Italy (four), and Germany (four) winning more. They have also finished as runners-up three other times.

The Albiceleste have only failed to qualify for one FIFA World Cup in their history, coming back in 1970. They did not participate in the competition from 1938 to 1954, as South American countries grew frustrated with the tournament repeatedly being held in Europe, which at that time presented a challenging travel barrier.

Argentina play their only match of the November international break when they travel to Angola for a friendly on November 14.

The reigning world champions cruised through the usually fiercely competitive CONMEBOL qualifying section, winning 12 of 18 games and finishing top, nine points ahead of second-placed Ecuador.

After Friday’s game, Lionel Scaloni’s squad will report to a training camp in Spain.

Angola finished fourth in their CAF qualification group, so they will not compete in next year’s finals in North America. Pedro Goncalves’s side are 89th in the FIFA world rankings.

The game has been organised as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence from Portugal.

Argentina lineup vs. Angola: Projected starting XI

Atletico Madrid trio Julian Alvarez, Giuliano Simeone and Nahuel Molina are unable to travel to Angola after failing to comply with the country’s mandatory yellow fever vaccination requirements in time.

Those absences, along with Enzo Fernandez‘s knee problem and first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez being rested, mean Scaloni is likely to run the rule over some of his back-up players.

Aston Villa playmaker Emiliano Buendia is back in the squad for the first time in three years. Union St. Gilloise defender Kevin Mac Allister — the older brother of Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister — has received his first international call-up.

Kevin Mac Allister is one of four uncapped players in the squad alongside Como midfielder Maximo Perrone, Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni and Strasbourg forward Joaquin Panichelli.

Lionel Messi will captain the side. The veteran forward was a second-half substitute in the only previous meeting between these teams, way back in a friendly game in May 2006.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has joined up with the squad for the training camp but will not feature against Angola having not played since February due to a serious knee injury.

Argentina projected starting XI (4-4-2, right to left): Rulli (GK) — K. Mac Allister, Otamendi, Senesi, Tagliafico — De Paul, A. Mac Allister, Lo Celso, Buendia — Messi, Martinez

Argentina will head into their last World Cup qualifier without their biggest star. Lionel Messi has confirmed he will skip the trip to Ecuador and instead return to Miami to prepare for the decisive weeks of the MLS season.

The 38-year-old played a full match in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Venezuela but admitted he is still feeling the effects of a recent injury.

While fans expected him to push through for one more international night, Messi has chosen to prioritize his fitness and focus on club duty with Inter Miami.

Speaking after the match, Messi explained: “I spoke with Leo [Scaloni]. He decided I should rest. I’m coming off an injury and, even though I feel good now, we prefer to avoid the trip and another match so I can get ready for what’s coming, which is very important. We’re fighting for MLS – it’s a priority. I hope to be in good shape.”

Head coach Lionel Scaloni also backed the move, saying: “He won’t travel to Ecuador. He finished exhausted. Honestly, he should have come off, but the emotion of the match and our plan for him to play the full game kept him on. He ended up very fatigued, and he deserves to spend this time with his family.”

Lionel Messi on course to miss out on historic milestone

By sitting out the Ecuador clash, Messi will also miss the chance to stand alone as the all-time leader in South American World Cup qualifier appearances.

His outing against Venezuela pulled him level with Ecuador’s Ivan Hurtado on 72 caps. Skipping this fixture means he stays tied at the top, at least for now.

For Argentina, the absence of their captain is a blow, but qualification is already secure.

For Inter Miami, it could be the boost they need in their playoff chase. Fans may miss him in Quito, but they’ll hope he’s saving his magic for when it matters most in MLS.

The Argentina national team will be returning to action in the World Cup Qualifiers, with their match against Chile on June 5.

Argentina stand on top of the CONMEBOL’s qualifying table with 31 points from 14 matches. Having qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup during the March international break, the upcoming matches will not be a matter of stress for the squad.

However, it is indeed an opportunity for the Argentine fans to see their own favorites on the pitch. When talking about favorites in the La Albiceleste squad, one can not leave out Lionel Messi.

Messi has not taken the pitch for Argentina since their 1-0 win over Peru in November last year. The eighth-time Ballon d’Or winner missed out on the chance to play for his nation in the March international break due to injury.

Now, questions about Messi’s fitness and availability for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers have become the talk of the town.

Is Lionel Messi available for Argentina’s upcoming World Cup Qualifiers?

The Argentina national team recently posted a video on their official social media accounts, announcing their arrival in Chile. The video included Messi, confirming his presence in the upcoming clash.

Hi ?????, we’re already here! ??? pic.twitter.com/vr6TxmwHXh

— Selección Argentina in English (@AFASeleccionEN) June 5, 2025

? Follow The Jugo Mobile on WhatsApp

The clash on Thursday could add to Messi’s 182 caps for Argentina, along with a chance to increase the number of goals for his nation, even though he is already La Albiceleste’s top goalscorer with 112 goals.

While there has not been a confirmation on whether Messi will be starting against Chile as of yet, his presence on the pitch, irrespective of the number of minutes, seems to be more than enough for the already excited Argentine fans.

Argentina fans had plenty to celebrate after their team crushed Brazil 4-1 in the World Cup qualifiers.

However, one key player was missing from the action — Lionel Messi. The Argentine captain was sidelined due to injury but still made his presence felt in a different way.

His reaction to the victory quickly grabbed attention.

How Lionel Messi reacted after Argentina’s big win over Brazil

While Messi couldn’t be on the pitch, he was very much involved in the moment. The Inter Miami star took to Instagram to show his excitement, posting a video of himself watching the match at home.

His simple yet powerful response? Five clapping emojis, showing his pride in the team’s dominant performance.

Follow The Jugo Mobile on WhatsApp

The convincing win was led by goals from Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Giuliano Simeone. Brazil managed to pull one back through Matheus Cunha, but it was not enough to stop Argentina’s charge.

With this result, Argentina extended their lead at the top of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying standings, moving eight points ahead of second-placed Ecuador.

The atmosphere at Estadio Monumental was intense. Argentine fans made their feelings clear, jeering Brazil’s Raphinha, who had made bold statements before the match. But on the pitch, it was all about La Albiceleste’s dominance.

What’s next for Messi and Argentina?

Argentina’s next World Cup qualifiers are set for June, with matches against Chile and Colombia. The big question now is whether Messi will be fit to return for those fixtures.

The 36-year-old suffered a minor adductor injury while playing for Inter Miami, leading to his absence from the national squad.

For now, Argentina will savor this victory, knowing that their squad can deliver even without their captain on the field. And as for Messi, his reaction made it clear — he’s still fully behind his team, even when watching from afar.

CONMEBOL qualification for the 2026 World Cup continues as teams look to solidify their standings in the highly competitive South American group. With each nation playing 18 matches in a round-robin format, the road to the World Cup is long and challenging.

Argentina remain at the top of the standings and in a strong position to qualify despite losing to Colombia in their second game of the September international break. Los Cafeteros are second in the table and also look to be a safe bet to secure passage to the finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The same cannot be said for Brazil. The five-time world champions followed up a 1-0 win over Ecuador with a defeat to Paraguay by the same scoreline, leaving them in fifth place in the standings after eight matches. A potentially significant win over Chile has eased some fears around the possible shock of them failing to qualify for a World Cup for the first time.

With six automatic spots available and one playoff berth, every match is crucial in the pursuit of World Cup dreams.

The Jugo Mobile will keep you updated with all the latest from the CONMEBOL qualification.

How CONMEBOL World Cup 2026 qualifying works

The CONMEBOL qualifying process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup involves all 10 member nations playing each other in a round-robin format.

Each team plays a total of 18 matches, one home and one away against every other team. Points are awarded based on match results: three points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a loss.

For the 2026 World Cup, the top six teams from the CONMEBOL standings automatically qualify for the tournament, reflecting an increase in World Cup slots due to the expanded format. The team finishing in seventh place enters an inter-confederation playoff, offering them another chance to qualify.

The final rankings are determined by points, goal difference, and goals scored. This format is known for being one of the toughest qualifying tournaments in world football, especially considering factors such as the likes of Bolivia and Ecuador playing their home matches at high altitude.

Wesley Fofana and the French Football Federation (FFF) have condemned Argentina’s viewing of Copa America celebrations, claiming the team made “racially offensive and discriminatory comments.”

Chelsea and France defender Fofana took to social media to highlight the nature of Argentina’s celebrations, which were broadcast on Instagram by club-mate Enzo Fernandez, who has since apologised.

The FFF released a statement revealing it will file a legal complaint over Argentina’s actions, while challenging FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Argentine Football Association president Claudio Fabián Tapia to comment on the matter.

Argentina’s controversial celebration: chant caught on video after Copa America final

After Fernandez posted images of Argentina’s celebrations following their Copa America final win over Colombia, his Chelsea teammate Fofana reposted the X-rated images with the caption: “Football in 2024: Uninhibited racism.”

In the celebration video, it is alleged that Argentina players made references to the French players’ family heritage, while alleged homophobic and transphobic slurs are also heard.

The chants and comments are believed to have come from the 2022 World Cup final in which Argentina defeated France on penalties.

Statement from the French Football Federation on the celebrations in Argentina

“The President of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, condemns in the strongest terms the unacceptable racist and discriminatory comments made against the players of the French national team in the context of a song sung by players and fans of the Argentine national team after their victory in the Copa America and broadcast in a video on social media,” reads a statement from the FFF.

“Given the seriousness of these shocking statements, contrary to the values of sport and human rights, the president of the FFF decided to directly challenge his Argentine counterpart and FIFA, and file a legal complaint for insulting, racist and discriminatory statements.”

Wesley Fofana’s relationship with Enzo Fernandez

Fofana and Fernandez have been teammates at Premier League club Chelsea for the past 18 months.

They were also on opposite sides of an international rivalry between their nations, France and Argentina, who played in the 2022 World Cup final.

Fofana and his Chelsea teammates Axel Disasi and Malo Gusto have all unfollowed Fernandez on Instagram since the allegations became public.

Research on celebrations in Argentina

FIFA and the Argentine Football Association have yet to comment on the racist celebrations, although world football’s governing body confirmed it is investigating the incident.

Chelsea issued a statement confirming it was conducting internal disciplinary proceedings, adding: “Chelsea Football Club believes any form of discriminatory behaviour is totally unacceptable. We are proud to be a perse and inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome.

“We acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate.”

Reports suggest the Premier League is also investigating.

Enzo Fernandez’s apologies

Hours after the accusations were made against Argentina, Fernandez used Instagram stories to apologize for the comments performed at team celebrations:

“I would like to sincerely apologise for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebrations. The song includes extremely offensive language and there is no excuse for such words.

“I oppose discrimination in all its forms and I apologize for having been carried away by the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry.”

Argentine government minister fired after Messi’s lawsuit

Argentina’s sports undersecretary Julio Garro urged national team captain Lionel Messi and Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia to apologize for the incident, though this conciliatory tone quickly fell out of favor with the populist government of President Javier Milei.

“The presidency says that no government can tell the Argentine national team – world champion and two-time Copa America champion – what to say, what to think or what to do, or any other citizen,” reads a statement published on social media. “That is why Julio Garro is no longer the nation’s Undersecretary of Sports.”

Vice President Victoria Villarruel also came out in support of Fernández and his colleagues.

“No country with a colonial history is going to look down on us for a song sung in a field or for telling a truth that no one wants to admit,” he said, in what could be seen as a historically selective version of events, given the fate of Argentina’s indigenous population at the hands of European settlers.

“Enough of acting offended, hypocrites. Enzo, I am with you, Messi, thank you for everything! Argentines always keep their heads held high! Long live Argentina!”

“We have never imposed our way of life on anyone, nor will we tolerate anyone trying to do the same to us.”

Alexis Mac Allister: Enzo Fernandez is not racist

Speaking to Urbana Play FM, Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister also highlighted the different cultural sensitivities in Fernandez’s defence. Mac Allister is believed not to have been on the bus where the offensive song was sung.

“You have to be careful with what you say or do, especially in Europe, where they are much more sensitive than here,” said the Liverpool midfielder. “The reality is that we are not a racist country, we are not used to talking so much about racism. Yes, it is a very important issue, obviously.”

“Enzo has already apologized and explained what happened. I don’t think there’s much more to say. We know Enzo, we know he would never do it with bad intentions, he’s not that guy, he’s not racist. It’s just a chant that stuck and it’s more of a mocking tone than anything else.

“But, as I said, we have to be very careful. I think the most important thing is that Enzo came out, he apologized accordingly, and that, in the end, should be valued.”

One of Argentina’s biggest hopes for a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics will be through the men’s football tournament.

The team, led by former Albiceleste and Barcelona star Javier Mascherano, will be looking to repeat the gold medal glory of Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.

Mascherano was part of both of those winning teams, while Lionel Messi tasted glory in 2008. There had been speculation that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner would be part of the group for Paris, but given that he is playing in the Copa America final and is halfway through his club season with Inter Miami, it is no surprise that Messi will not be at the Olympics this time around.

Below is the squad selected by Mascherano for the football tournament, which begins at the end of July.

Argentina’s football squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics

The Argentine squad for the Paris Olympics is made up of 18 players. Of these, 15 are in the U-23 category, while three older players – with no age limit – are authorized. In addition, four reserve players have been called up, who will be on call in case of injury to any member of the squad.

Below is the list selected by manager Javier Mascherano after a handful of withdrawals due to clubs’ refusal to send their players (Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández, Athletico Paranaense’s Lucas Esquivel, Porto’s Alan Varela, Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Valentín Barco were all denied the call-up).

Who are the Argentine players with extra age for the 2024 Olympic Games?

Argentina has called up three over-age players for the Paris Olympics. The selection of these older stars posed a problem given that the tournament takes place close to the end of the Copa America and at a time when club teams are beginning pre-season preparations.

After learning of their respective clubs’ willingness to release them for the tournament, Mascherano settled on Gerónimo Rulli (Ajax), Nicolás Otamendi (Benfica) and Julián Álvarez (Manchester City) as his three over-age players. Along with Botafogo’s Thiago Almada, these are the members of Mascherano’s squad who were also part of the 2022 World Cup champions’ squad.

There had been speculation for some time that Messi would be at the Olympics, but that possibility was quickly ruled out. Angel Di Maria also turned down a possible call-up, while Emiliano Martinez had hoped to be involved but was not given permission by Aston Villa.

Alejandro Garnacho was another of those tipped to be part of the Olympic squad, and last month it was reported in Argentina that Manchester United had blocked his call-up to Mascherano’s squad. However, according to the Manchester Evening NewsArgentina never asked United to release the winger for the Paris Games.

When does the Olympic football tournament start?

The 2024 Olympic football tournament begins on July 24 and concludes on August 10.

Argentina Olympics football schedule, groups

Argentina has been drawn into Group B of the men’s football tournament at the Paris Games. In that group it will face Morocco, Iraq and Ukraine.
