There’s very few plays in sports more pressure-packed than a penalty kick in the World Cup.

The simple task of scoring on penalty kicks has decided many World Cup matches in the past and often determine which team moves on and which team heads home. The moment right before a player takes the penalty kick provides a build-up of tension that can’t be matched across sports.

While penalty kicks aren’t the purest part of the sport, they provide the drama that very few plays can provide. Here’s a breakdown of how penalty kicks work in the World Cup.

2026 WORLD CUP HQ: Latest World Cup news | Full World Cup schedule | Buy World Cup tickets

How do penalty kicks work in soccer?

Regulation penalties

In regulation, penalty kicks only occur when a team commits a foul on an offensive player in its own penalty box. From there, the team awarded a penalty kick can decide which player it wants to take the kick.

The only players allowed inside the penalty box during a penalty kick are the shooter and the goalie, who must stay on the goalie line until the ball is kicked. Everyone else must stand on the periphery of the box until the penalty kick is complete.

Penalty shootouts

Penalty shootouts occur if a match is tied after both regulation and extra time, but the match must decide a winner. A penalty shootout is a series of 10 penalty kicks, five on each team, as the team with the most goals through five rounds taking home the win.

World Cup penalty shootout rules

If a World Cup match is still tied after extra time, the match heads to a penalty shootouts. Each team chooses five players to take the shootout, and whichever team has the most goals after five rounds is declared the victor.

During a single penalty kick, the ball is placed in the middle of the penalty box. The player shooting gets one kick to score, while the goalie tries to block the ball from going in the net.

What happens if you tie in a penalty shootout?

In a scenario where both teams have scored the same number of goals through five rounds of a penalty shootout, the shootout gets extended by an extra round each until one team scored and another team didn’t in the same round.

For example, if the sixth shooter on each team scores, then there is a seventh round. However, if one team’s sixth shooter scored while the other team’s sixth shooter missed, then the match is over.

How much extra time before penalties?

In a match where two teams are tied after regulation, those teams will play 30 minutes of extra time before heading to a penalty shootout. That includes two 15-minute periods, brief stoppage time, a five-minute break before extra time and a one-minute break in between the two extra time periods.

Can the World Cup final end in a penalty shootout?

Yes, the World Cup final can end in a penalty shootout. In fact, three times in World Cup history has the final match gone to penalty kicks to decide a winner:

1994: Brazil over Italy

2006: Italy over France

2022: Argentina over France

How are players selected for penalty kicks?

Each coach gets to select which player takes the penalty kick, but during a penalty shootout, players can’t go twice until every player in the game when extra time expired gets a chance to go once.

Therefore, in the initial five rounds of a penalty shootout, 10 different players must attempt a kick, five on each team. If the penalty shootout continues beyond the five rounds, a new player on each team must attempt the kick instead of anyone who previously went. That includes the goalies, who are not only eligible to kick but are required to attempt a kick before a different player goes twice.

Arknights Endfield is set to release this month, and the game will be playable on PC, Android, iO,S and PlayStation. With the game running on so many different platforms, players are likely concerned about its performance and system requirements. So, check Arknights Endfield system requirements from our guide here and learn whether your device can run it or not.

Arknights Endfield PC System Requirements

Here is a table listing the minimum and recommended PC system requirements for Arknights Endfield:

ComponentArknights Endfield Minimum RequirementsArknights Endfield Recommended Requirements

CPU

Intel Core i5-9400F / AMD Ryzen 5 3600

Intel Core i7-10700K / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X

Graphics Card

NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB / AMD RX 580 8 GB

NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super / AMD RX 6700 XT

RAM

16 GB RAM

32 GB RAM

Storage

60 GB

60 GB

OS

Windows 10/11 (64-bit)

Windows 11 (64-bit)

Internet

5 Mbps broadband

15 Mbps

The PC requirements for Arknights Endfield are not too demanding. The CPU requirement for the recommended setting is only at 10th gen processors, while the GPU requirement is only an RTX 2060 Super or equivalent. However, the RAM requirement is a bit on the higher side. 32 GB RAM is considered a luxury in the current market. The internet requirement is also fairly low. A 15 Mbps broadband connection would let you enjoy multiplayer seamlessly.

Arknights Endfield Android System Requirements

Here is a table listing the minimum and recommended Android system requirements for Arknights Endfield:

ComponentArknights Endfield Minimum RequirementsArknights Endfield Recommended Requirements

Processor

Snapdragon 855 / Dimensity 1000 / Kirin 990

Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 / Dimensity 9000 / Kirin 9000S

Memory

6 GB RAM

8 GB RAM

Storage

28 GB

28 GB

Android version

Android 10.0 or HarmonyOS 2.0.0

Android 11.0 or HarmonyOS 4.0.0

The Android device requirements for Arknights Endfield are a bit more demanding. The game requires a Snapdragon 855 or equivalent processor to even run the game, and a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor to run it seamlessly. The RAM requirements are not that high, though, with only 8 GB being recommended, which is fairly standard in most mid-range smartphones nowadays.

Arknights Endfield iOS System Requirements

Here is a table listing the minimum and recommended iOS system requirements for Arknights Endfield:

ComponentArknights Endfield Minimum RequirementsArknights Endfield Recommended Requirements

Device

iPhone 11 or iPad (A13 chip or newer)

iPhone 13 Pro or iPad (A15 chip or newer)

Storage

28 GB

28 GB

iOS version

iOS 15.0 / iPadOS 15.0 or later

iOS 15.0 / iPadOS 15.0 or later

Finally, you will need to have an iPhone 11 or iPad with an A13 chip to run the game. The recommended device, however, starts from the iPhone 13 Pro or an iPad with the A15 chip. This means older iPhone users won’t be happy, and it is time to get an upgrade if you want to play Arknights Endfield on your iOS device.

Arknights Endfield Download Size for PC, Android, and iOS

Arknights Endfield is not going to have a massive size on launch. The release storage requirements reveal that the game will require 60 GB of space for PC and 28 GB for mobile devices. These are not huge asks, but with subsequent updates, expect the game’s download size to increase. This is a common trend in all gacha games, so Arknights Endfield should follow the same route.

What do you think about Arknight Endfield’s minimum and recommended system requirements? Let us know in the comments below!

In just a few short months, millions of dedicated soccer fans will travel to the United States to watch their country’s national team compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

From Boston to Atlanta and Los Angeles, 11 different American venues will be hosting matches throughout the tournament next summer. The highly anticipated final will be held in New York at MetLife Stadium on July 19.

Non-U.S. citizens will need a visitor visa to attend games across the country, but they will be able to take advantage of several expedited processes put in place for the global tournament.

Are you planning to attend a game during the World Cup and need to obtain a U.S. visa? We’re here to help.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to obtaining your visa for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including rules, requirements and tips for the process.

Do I need a visa to travel to the United States for the World Cup?

Yes, the majority of non-U.S. citizens will be required to have a valid visitor visa (B-1/B-2) in order to travel to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but there are some exceptions and alternate processes.

Foreign visitors from any of the 42 countries who participate in the Visa Waiver Program can be cleared using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) instead.

Canadian and Bermudan passport holders do not require any additional authorization to seek entry into the U.S. as tourists.

Read below to determine which process is the best fit for you.

Visa Waiver Program, ESTA & tourist visas explained for World Cup fans

Obtaining a visitor visa can be confusing. Here’s a breakdown of some key terms you should know to make the process easier.

Visa Waiver Program

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. You can find a list of VWP-designated countries here.

If you are a citizen of a VWP-designated country, you can apply for entry to the United States through ESTA rather than obtaining a visitor visa.

Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)

The ESTA is a web-based system operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection that determines eligibility to travel to the United States. In order to travel without a visitor visa under the VWP, you must have a valid ESTA approval before boarding a U.S.-bound flight.

Visitor visas

If you’re not a citizen of a country participating in the VWP, you will be required to obtain a B-1/B-2 visitor visa to enter the United States. This process takes longer, as it includes an online application and in-person interview. To qualify, applicants must prove a valid purpose for their visit, sufficient funds, and strong ties to their home country.

How to apply for a U.S. visa or ESTA step-by-step

Here’s a step-by-step guide for obtaining a U.S. visitor visa or ESTA approval.

U.S. visitor visa process

Complete the online application Form DS-160 and print the confirmation page to bring to your interview.

Schedule a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country where you live. Wait times for interview appointments may vary by location.

Pay the non-refundable visa application fee ahead of your interview.

Gather required documentation (Passport, Form DS-160 confirmation, application fee payment receipt and a valid photo of yourself).

Attend your visa interview.

If your visa is approved, it will be sent to you via mail.

ESTA approval process

If your home country participates in the Visa Waiver Program:

Confirm that your passport meets the program requirements (Electronic passport or “E-Passport” with a chip)

Complete the ESTA application online.

Pay the authorization fee.

Await your approval via email.

Travel tips for World Cup visitors: documents, timing & border entry FAQs

How soon should I apply for a visa for the World Cup?

Due to long wait times and potential delays, you should apply for a visitor visa as soon as possible. A priority system will be available for U.S. visa applicants, but applying early is crucial to secure an interview slot before the tournament.

Citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries should still apply for ESTA approval ASAP, as delays or a denial would require a full visitor visa application.

Which travel documents will I need to enter the United States?

On top of a B-1/B-2 visitor visa or ESTA approval, travelers must show proof of a passport that is valid for six months beyond the period of their intended stay in the U.S.

Citizens of the countries listed here are exempt from the six-month rule and need only have a passport valid for their intended period of stay.

Is my visitor visa valid in Canada and Mexico?

No, a B-1/B-2 visitor visa or ESTA approval only guarantees entry to the United States. If you’re looking to attend a World Cup match in Canada or Mexico, you will have to go through a separate visa process for that country.

Does my World Cup ticket guarantee that I will be issued a visa?

As North Carolina product and New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was in the midst of pulling off a massive upset over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night, the program’s social media account was oddly silent on it about it.

That was strange because you would think UNC would want to celebrate one of its own in what was easily the biggest win of Maye’s NFL career.

Now, we have a possible explanation for why that didn’t happen.

According to 247 Sports’ Ross Martin, Belichick has put out a directive to not tweet or retweet anything Patriots-related, which is obviously a result of the bad blood between Belichick and the Patriots following his exit in 2024.

“According to sources inside the UNC football program, it is a directive from the staff (Bill Belichick) to not tweet/retweet anything Patriots-related,” Martin wrote. “That’s clearly why UNC football has not posted anything from Drake Maye’s electric primetime win over the Buffalo Bills.”

Talk about petty.

UPDATE: We have an update!

Since this article was posted, UNC has broken its silence on Maye and posted a tweet celebrating his win over the Bills on Sunday night (READ MORE HERE).

.@DrakeMaye2 pulling off some magic, where have we seen this before 🤔

— Carolina Football (@UNCFootball) October 6, 2025

END OF UPDATE

This isn’t the first petty thing Belichick has done. He has also banned Patriots staff from coming to North Carolina’s facility.

“It’s clear I’m not welcome there around their facility,” he told reporters, per the Tar Heel Tribune. “So, they’re not welcome at ours. It’s pretty simple.”

While the Patriots are starting to thrive under head coach Mike Vrabel, Belichick’s stint in North Carolina has not been good.

UNC is 2-3 to start the Belichick’s tenure, but the Tar Heels have been blown out bad in their three losses, which have come against TCU, UCF and Clemson. In those games, UNC has lost by a combined score of 120-33.

It’s a real shame the Tar Heels can’t even celebrate one of their own, and it’s even worse that directive is coming from a coach who has fallen well short of expectations thus far.

The 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup presents the top North and Central American nations with their last opportunity for competitive football before next summer’s FIFA World Cup.

With the United States, Mexico and Canada all qualifying automatically for the 2026 World Cup directly as joint-hosts, the Gold Cup represents their final chance for matches with competitive stakes.

Thus, it’s an important moment for the three 2026 hosts to test themselves against the best in their own confederation.

Those three nations are the only ones to have won the biennial Gold Cup across its existence, since being incepted in 1991 as the confederation’s championship tournament.

The Jugo Mobile brings you an overview of how the Gold Cup will determine its knockout-stage participants once the group stage has been conducted.

CONCACAF Gold Cup tiebreak rules: How group standings are determined

Sixteen nations contest the 2025 Gold Cup group stage, with 15 qualifiers from CONCACAF and one guest participant.

Broken into four groups of four teams each, the countries are hoping to position themselves through the three group matches to qualify for the eight-team knockout stage.

The top two teams from each group go through, with those group standings determined by points accrued over those first three matchdays (three for a win, one for a tie, none for a defeat). Should teams be level on points in the same group, a tiebreaker must be used.

The first tiebreaker in the group stage is goal difference, which is the most common method around the globe in both knockout and league competition.

After that, goals scored are used, followed by head-to-head record between the teams concerned.

Below is the full list of tiebreakers for when teams are level on points:

Goal difference in all group matches

Goals scored in all group matches

Head-to-head results (points obtained between teams in question)

Head-to-head goal difference between teams in question

Head-to-head goals scored between teams in question

Fair play points in all group matches (lowest total wins tiebreaker)

Yellow card: 1 point

Second yellow card: 3 points

Straight red card: 4 points

Drawing of lots

How do the CONCACAF Gold Cup knockout stages work?

Teams that finish top two in their group advance to the knockout stage, with eight of the 16 total teams moving on to contest the quarterfinals.

Unlike the CONCACAF Nations League, the Gold Cup bracket is predetermined, broken down by group and finish to avoid potential rematches until the final.

In the quarterfinals, the four group winners match up against the group runners-up, with Group A and Group D teams meeting on opposite sides of the bracket, while Group B and Group C qualifiers also matching up on opposite ends.

If teams are level at the end of 90 minutes in knockout matches, games will progress straight to a penalty shootout with no extra-time played.

High school often holds a special place in our hearts, and it’s filled with those carefree days when we could spend time with our friends every day. If you are seeking an easy way to relive those moments, Roblox brings you a game called Bayside High School.

There have been many high-profile critical moments as a result of instructions tennis players have received from their coaches during matches over the years.

In-match coaching once carried a higher risk of code violations, and some of the sport’s biggest names were among those punished for taking advice while playing.

Training restrictions are, however, being reduced under rule changes approved in mid-2022, which have drawn a mixed reaction from players and coaches.

What are the current rules and to what extent are players allowed to be coached during matches? Here’s what you need to know for the upcoming US Open and beyond.

Off-field coaching: what were the rules before?

Communication between players and coaches was generally prohibited, although regulations around coaching varied considerably between the men’s controlling body, the ATP, the women’s equivalent, the WTA, and different types of tournaments and levels of the sport – and still do, to a lesser extent.

Unlike men’s players, for example, women’s players were allowed to request on-court coaching once per set, provided it was not a Grand Slam tournament. The rules on in-match coaching in women’s football have been increasingly relaxed since 2008.

The ITF governing body also allows players to freely access training at any time during Davis Cup and Federation Cup matches.

No coaching is allowed when players take a bathroom break, which is part of the reason a tournament official accompanies players when they request it. But they can talk to their coach if their match is suspended, which might partly explain why the pace of matches sometimes changes when there is a long interruption in the middle of a match.

How have the rules regarding in-match tennis coaching changed?

While talking during matches is still not allowed, coaching with restrictions is now permitted under the rules initially introduced at the 2022 US Open.

The Australian Open also implemented the trial in January 2023, followed by Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Coaches can give brief verbal instructions and provide guidance through gestures, but they still cannot have conversations with their players during breaks in play, when there is a brief delay in the game, or when competitors are taking a bathroom break.

What are the sanctions and penalties for off-field coaching?

Players are initially given a warning when a referee considers that they have communicated with a coach in a manner or at a time that is not permitted.

A second infraction results in a point penalty (loss of one point) and a third results in the loss of an entire match.

One of the most explosive examples of the violation occurred during the 2018 US Open final, when Serena Williams was furious with umpire Carlos Ramos after he penalized her for receiving advice from her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, who appeared to be making subtle gestures.

It’s no surprise to see Mouratoglou publicly backing the decision to change the rules. “Congratulations to the ATP for ‘legalizing’ a practice that has been happening in almost every match for decades,” Williams’ coach of 10 years wrote on Twitter. “No more hypocrisy.”

Another player who was coached by Mouratoglou, Stefanos Tsitsipas, has been punished several times for coaching players, including when his father, Apostolos, was also punished during his son’s loss to Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals of the 2022 Australian Open.

What are tennis players saying about the changes to training rules?

Arguments have long diverged on this issue. Proponents of the changes argue that tennis should be no different from many other sports in allowing coaches to direct players during matches, while others argue that an individual sport should not encourage outside influence while the action is taking place.

Tennis legend Roger Federer has said he’s “not entirely for it.” “I think it’s pretty cool that in tennis you’re kind of alone on the court,” the 20-time Grand Slam champion said in 2017. “Not everyone has the same resources to train. So I’m not sure it’s that beneficial.”

Rafael Nadal’s coach, Carlos Moya, is not in favor of it. “What makes tennis a special sport is that it is the only sport where you are alone against the other, without the help of anyone,” Moya said. Eurosport when the rule changes were discussed.

“In the rest of the sport, you have that contact in one way or another, whether it’s through your coach, through the radio, with the caddie, etc.

“That lonely battle that the tennis player wages – placing the pieces of the puzzle 180 beats and 20 seconds between points, choosing the right tactics for each game – is part of the quality of every player.

“For me, it is essential that the player thinks for himself. The coach’s work is already done. It’s like an exam: the teacher can help you, but once the exam starts, you are alone. The coach’s work must be done before the match. The player must have mastered all the variations because then things will happen that were surely not foreseen in the scenario.”

Twelve-time Grand Slam champion Billie Jean King said she was skeptical about the impact a rule change would have.

“They say that in tennis you have to think for yourself, but I have told the players many times what they have to do and they can do it or not. It’s up to them to decide.”

2021 US Open winner Medvedev was similarly ambiguous. “During the match, I don’t really see how a coach can help like in other sports, where tactics are so important,” he said, speaking ahead of a match against Taylor Fritz.

“I think in every five games a coach will suddenly say to you, ‘Change position on the return’ or ‘Play the backhand’, if he sees it from the outside. So I think that can sometimes be a game changer.

“At the same time, in many games… let’s say I play against Fritz and it’s our first meeting. I know how he plays and he knows how I play. I don’t think the coaching on the pitch tomorrow will make a big difference. But in general, I don’t see any disadvantages to it – I’ve never been opposed to it.”

<picture></picture>

Denis Shapovalov warned that allowing coaching could “change the tradition” and Fritz said he “really hated” the idea, adding that it is “not something that should be part of our sport”.

Medvedev’s coach Gilles Cervara said the rule change would end “hypocrisy” and “lack of consistency” in the application of penalties during matches, adding Major tennis tournaments:”Tennis is such a cerebral sport that for some players, a talking coach is more annoying than anything else.”

Tsitsipas said he was “happy” with the change. “I don’t see any reason to have a coach with you if he can’t share some of his perspective and knowledge with you when you’re competing,” the Greek said.

“I feel like it’s something very natural in our sport. It happens to almost every player. The fact that tennis is now legalized is going to make tennis a little more peaceful and make players focus more on the game, less on some other kind of nonsense.”

<picture></picture>

Even after the trial period for the rule change began, there were mid-match altercations involving coaches. “These people keep talking, pointing, pointing,” No. 23 seed Nick Kyrgios shouted from his box at the U.S. Open during his first-round singles victory over regular doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis. “But he’s allowed to do it. It’s legal now, it’s legal.”

Kyrgios, who has always been outspoken, had previously expressed his disagreement with Mouratoglou’s views on Twitter. “The player [previously] “I had to figure things out for myself,” he told her.

“That’s the beauty of it. What happens if it’s a top player versus a bottom player, who doesn’t have or can’t afford to have a coach?”

2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina’s coach Stefano Vukov has been criticised for being too aggressive when taking advantage of the new rules during his player’s run to the 2023 Australian Open final.

Following Rybakina’s loss to Aryna Sabalenka in Melbourne, former world number one Pam Shriver tweeted: “As I watch Rybakina attempt to win her second major in seven months, I hope she finds a coach who speaks to her and treats her with respect at ALL times and will never accept anything less.”

<picture></picture>

Rybakina replied: “He is a passionate coach who knows tennis very well. Unlike those who make such comments, he has a great knowledge of me as a person and as an athlete.

“Those who know me well know that I would never accept a coach who would not respect me and all our work. I may be discreet on the field and in general, but inside me there is a competitive athlete who wants to achieve great things – and Stefano has helped me a lot in this sense. So please, do not take into account the false information that claims otherwise.”

Explaining himself, Vukov mentioned one of the new challenges presented to coaches trying to advise players during matches.

“It’s part of our sport, it’s normal,” he said. “There are 10,000 people on the field; getting a player’s attention is certainly not easy and people don’t understand it. I have to shout something if she’s off the track.”

“People can interpret that however they want, but at the end of the day we’re just doing our job. Coaching is now allowed and she’s using it in the best way possible.”

For American prospect Ben Shelton’s coach, Dean Goldfine, the “big gray area” is the question of what constitutes a conversation between a player and a coach.

“It’s kind of ridiculous, just from that perspective,” Goldfine said, telling the The New York Times that being allowed to receive coaching during games had been “huge” for Shelton.
