Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal are the opposition but their recently installed head coach is former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi.

Inzaghi’s Inter pushed City agonisingly close in the 2023 UEFA Champions League final, where Rodri scored the only goal in Istanbul, while the Nerazzurri held Pep Guardiola’s side to a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium during the league phase of last season’s competition.

It will be intriguing to see whether a City team attacking with more variety and fluency in this competition than they did at any point during the 2024/25 campaign can have more success against an Inzaghi defence this time around.

Al Hilal impressed during the group stage, going unbeaten as they drew with Real Madrid and secured a place in the knockout stages by beating Pachuca 2-0.

Santos are not playing at the Club World Cup.

Injuries have again restricted his involvement in the Brasileirao, but he did captain the side in their last game on June 6 — a 1-0 defeat to Club World Cup competitors Botafogo. He was sent off for two yellow cards, the second of which was awarded after he scored a goal using his hand.

Although his loan contract finishes at the end of June, it seems unlikely Neymar will be added to the Al Hilal squad for the knockout stage if they get that far.

That comes in at around £700,000 ($947,000 / €830,000) per week over the three-year offer if Fernandes were to make the move.

They also reported, alongside ESPN, that the PIF-funded club was willing to pay a £100 million ($135.5m / €118.5m) transfer fee to secure Fernandes’ arrival.

The midfielder’s contract at Old Trafford expires in two years, so now would be the time for United to sell if they are hoping to get a significant fee for the 30-year-old.
