Alexander-Walker makes Hawks, NBA Most Improved Player history

The expectation was that either Deni Avdija of the Portland Trail Blazers or Jalen Duren would the ones to win the NBA Most Improved Player of the Year award. In a great twist of events for the Hawks, Nickeil Alexander-Walker was the one who notched the award.

During the 2024-25 season, Alexander-Walker was only able to register averages of 9.4 points while knocking down 44% of his shots from the field and dishing out 2.7 assists. Fast forward a season later, the Hawks saw him increase his production as he scored 20.8 points on a 46% field goal clip and 3.7 assists on a nightly basis.

This NBA Most Improved Player win by Alexander-Walker notches a lot of historic feats too. Through his win, the Hawks have now won the award for two years in a row. Notably, Dyson Daniels took the hardware home back in the 2024-25 season. They are the first team in league history to have won the award back-to-back, per StatMuse. This is a great display of player development for the Hawks given how they’ve managed to springboard two players into stardom for consecutive years.

Alexander-Walker is also the third Hawks player to have won the NBA Most Improved Player award. Alan Henderson was the first to win for the franchise back in 1998. The Hawks had to wait 27 years until Daniels won it again in 2025. Now, they did not have the same waiting time because of the consecutive wins.

More than that, Alexander-Walker became the oldest NBA Most Improved Player winner since 2014. Goran Dragic was 27 years old when he won it, Alexander-Walker shares the same age now. Darrell Armstrong still remains the oldest player to have taken that piece of hardware home because he was 30 years and 317 days old upon winning with the Orlando Magic. He notched this feat way back in 1999.

In the past decade, the winner of the NBA Most Improved Player award becomes a crucial focal point in a team’s postseason success. Will this remain true for the Hawks?

This was also the 10th game this year where Cousins also threw an interception, and it was his fifth-straight game with a pick.

In his past five games, Cousins has thrown one touchdown and nine interceptions, and Atlanta is 1-4 as a team in that span.

Will the Falcons bench Kirk Cousins?

After the game, head coach Raheem Morris continued to stand by Cousins as the starter, although he made it clear that the veteran quarterback is not playing up to the standard that the team expects.

“He’s got to play better,” Morris told the media, via The Athletic’s Josh Kendall. “We have to find a way to get him to play better. We have to play better at the quarterback position.”

Cousins also acknowledged that he needs to play better in order for the team to be successful.

“It’s not where I want to be,” Cousins told ESPN’s Laura Rutledge after the game. “There’s a lot of room for improvement.”

Cousins later added that his coach was “stating the obvious” when he said the veteran QB needed to play better.

With Cousins continuing to struggle, the calls for Atlanta to replace him with rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will only grow louder. The Falcons are just one game back of the Buccaneers in the NFC South race, and Atlanta holds the tiebreaker over Tampa Bay, so they are very much still in the mix.

Just a few months removed from an Eastern Conference Finals berth in the 2024 NBA Playoffs, the Indiana Pacers would like to return to winning ways as soon as possible amidst an unprecedented offensive regression.

For Chicago, their desired outcome following the season’s end is that the franchise will possess a top-five pick in the 2025 NBA Draft after completing a fire sale to get rid of their most valued assets. 

Though Chicago’s rebuild likely should have gotten underway several years ago, there’s no better time than now to sell their most impactful star-caliber contributors to contenders looking to swap prospects and draft capital for an established star. 

As a result, Chicago’s general manager Marc Eversley could be tempted to pick up the phone to contact Indiana about the likelihood of shipping their budding star guard out in exchange for assets to complement their rebuilding efforts.

After receiving Most Improved Player buzz in 2023-24 and his continued consistency this season, Chicago’s Coby White is a likely candidate to be dealt by the trade deadline. 

The former No. 7 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, the offensively gifted White is currently posting averages of 18.1 points and 4.7 assists through 23 appearances for Chicago this season.

As a versatile and shifty scoring threat, the potential addition of White in Indiana could be instrumental in the Pacers’ return to the postseason.

The franchise’s rapid decline on the offensive end of the floor from last season to the present day is quite interesting, simply because most of their personnel has remained the same. 

Indiana’s current No. 19 ranked 111.7 offensive rating is a far cry from their remarkable 120.5 figure from a year prior, but introducing White to the lineup could be crucial to an offensive resurgence. 

Playing alongside Indiana’s All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton in the backcourt, White’s potential as a pure scorer could truly be unlocked.

In order to acquire White, Chicago would likely seek several of Indiana’s young pieces at the guard position, namely Andrew Nembhard or Ben Sheppard. 

Chicago could even try their luck at receiving first-round draft compensation in exchange for their homegrown 24-year-old star.

Barrett’s career 51.8 percent true shooting — a measure of shooting efficiency that accounts for the value of free throws and 3-pointers — in New York was well below the league-average 58.0 percent last season, giving him the reputation of a chucker. 

Barrett came to Toronto via trade with the attitude of a kid changing schools. He had an opportunity to reinvent himself and literally ran with it. Over the course of 32 games, Barrett completely smashed away that chucker narrative, increasing his true shooting to an excellent 61.5 percent while raising his scoring.

Those are elite scoring and efficiency marks, achieved only by the best of the best. Only 14 players were able to hit them last year, and that list is comprised of the best players in the league. All of our top eight players going into the 2024-25 season are included, along with other All-Stars.

Barrett’s wild improvement went largely unnoticed on a bad Raptors team. If he does it again for a full season, the acclaim will start piling up. He has a great chance at the league’s Most Improved Player award.

Why RJ Barrett will be NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2024-25

The big question for Barrett this season is how much of his growth with the Raptors last season was for real and how much was just hot shooting. He dramatically increased his 3-point percentage, from 33.1 percent in the first half of the year in New York to 39.2 percent in Toronto. 

That may seem fluky, but Barrett continued that hot streak through the Olympics for Team Canada, averaging 19.8 points per game and hitting 43.8 percent of his 3s. Plus, he did hit 40.1 percent of his 3s in his second year in the league. This sharpshooter might be who Barrett is now. 

Even if Barrett’s 3-point accuracy goes down, he’s still a different and better player than he was in New York for a couple of different reasons. 

First, Barrett learned to lean into his strengths. He’s a bully driver at his best. When he puts his head down and tries to muscle through defenders, nobody is stopping him. He was a fantastic finisher at the rim with the Raptors and taking more of those close-in shots. That improved shot selection and heavier reliance on drives contributed greatly to his increased scoring and efficiency. 

When the Raptors acquired RJ Barrett, his Shot Quality Metrics improved significantly from 22-23 to last season.

Second, Barrett had a much easier role with the Raptors. Playing next to natural initiators like Immanuel Quickley and Scottie Barnes paid immediate dividends for him. His percentage of assisted shots went way up from 54.3 percent two years ago to 68.4 percent after being traded.

That rise in table-setting for Barrett shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. He played in a more isolation-heavy system throughout his tenure with Tom Thibodeau and the Knicks. It wasn’t a good fit for him. In a more egalitarian, cutting-heavy offense, he has seen his scoring thrive. 

Barrett also saw his playmaking skyrocket last season — his assists jumped from 2.8 per game in New York to 4.1 per game in Toronto. He had the ball in his hands in advantage situations more often, and he was empowered to create for teammates. 

Barrett’s decision-making in New York wasn’t nearly as good as it has been in Toronto. He’s become better at reading the defense and finding open teammates when defenses collapse on his drives. 

RANKINGS NBA’S BEST DEFENDERS: 100-11 | 10-1

Barrett has found a great fit in Darko Rajakovic’s offensive system, and the results from last year are there for anyone who was watching. He was only 23 years old when he was traded, and thinking that he was a mostly finished product only four years into his career was a mistake from the Knicks that the Raptors are capitalizing on.

Barrett showed tremendous growth last season, and he’s set up to continue that rise this year.

I had the chance to get my hands on NBA 2K25 during 2K Community Day and test out the new game, but after a weekend spent cooped up in my PlayStation, exploring every element of the game, this year’s edition is without a doubt the smoothest version of the game yet, with a ton of new features.

From the enhanced WNBA offering to The City’s overhaul, here are five key takeaways from NBA 2K25

NBA 2K25’s gameplay is on another level

Much of the criticism leveled at NBA 2K24 was directed at the gameplay, dribbling engine, and overall feel of the game, and you can tell that the development team went away and took their time in the lab, creating the smoothest gameplay the game has had to date.

As soon as you pick up the controller, dribbling really comes into its own, especially when you attack the basket with a wide range of dribbling moves to get past your defender.

NBA 2K has added 9,000 new ProPLAY animations, including 1,500 dribble animations, 1,100 signature shot animations and over 1,300 new off-ball animations, including 150 new signature move styles based on the most-registered players of the 2023-24 NBA season, making it super realistic.

The shooting divided opinions, but overall it was a victory

Shooting in NBA 2K25 is perhaps the biggest difference from last year’s version of the game with an all-new shot meter, which takes a bit of time to get the hang of.

Pro Stick Rhythm Shooting allows players to simulate a player’s shooting rhythm with the joystick and when it comes to the shot meter, you have the option of three different settings: Arrow (default), Ring, and Dial.

The main difference is that the shot counter no longer freezes on release, but tracks the entire movement of the shot, which is especially noticeable when shooting layups or free throws in online games.

You can also customize the shot counter in the Customize HUD screen or just disable it completely.

Overall, once you get the hang of it, the shooting motion is much smoother and more realistic in NBA 2K25.

Improved game modes across the board

Exploring NBA 2K25’s different game modes was fun and offered an expansive gameplay experience across MyCareer, MyTeam, MyPlayer, and MyNBA modes.

MyNBA’s “The Steph Era” mode, which features the 2017 Golden State Warriors, takes the cake — you can either play as them or try to stop them — but it’s an enjoyable mode that lets you navigate one of the most dominant eras in recent NBA history.

WNBA mode is bigger than ever, headlined by the “Become the GOAT” mode in the Pursuit of Greatness storyline.

This mode sees players race for the title of Rookie of the Year alongside Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Rickea Jackson, vying to eclipse the legends of the game, with detailed and visualized progression of their achievements along the way and how they compare to the GOAT they are chasing.

For the first time, WNBA players will participate in press conferences after key moments in games, such as breaking records or receiving awards like Rookie of the Year or MVP.

Between A’Ja Wilson’s dominance as the highest rated WNBA player in 2K history with a 99, and Caitlin Clark’s three-point shooting from anywhere, the game’s WNBA mode is definitely worth checking out.

City refresh is hoops’ dream playground

You can get lost in the reimagined city of NBA 2K25.

The redesigned city lets you take your MyPlayer to a variety of outdoor parks, highlighted by the Proving Grounds where you can battle other players in 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, or 5v5 games.

Although the city is smaller in NBA 2K25, it feels more intimate and easier to navigate.

A big plus is the return of MyCOURT, where you can customize the arena and train with friends and MyCareer teammates.

Notably, old terrain models like Rivet Park are returning in Triple Threat Park, along with other nostalgic battlefields from previous versions of the game.

Wemby dominated as a rookie, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, four assists, three and a half blocks and a steal per game, and won unanimous Rookie of the Year honors.

While Wemby will certainly improve this season, after competing in the Olympics and winning silver, he probably won’t win the MIP. Not that he doesn’t deserve it, but the MIP is more for unknown players who make the leap to stardom in one season.

The second, third and fourth favorites to win the award are Evan Mobley, Jonathan Kuminga and Josh Giddey. These players are certainly more qualified to win, as two of them are more role players than stars, and they have a chance this season to prove they are stars.

That being said, don’t write Wemby off. While he’s already a superstar, if he goes from averaging 21, 11, 4, 3 1/2, and 12 to 30 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 blocks, and 2 steals, he could easily be an MIP. But at the same time, those are truly MVP-type numbers. All fans and critics can do now is wait, and time will tell.

According to the post, OnePlus will continue to use a BOE OLED display on its next smartphone. However, according to Jie, the second-generation panel produced by BOE will be brighter than its predecessor and will provide eye protection.

For those wondering, the OnePlus 12’s display has a maximum brightness of 1,600 and 4,500 nits. From what the OnePlus official shared, the upcoming device promises a brighter display than this one.

Candidates for the most improved players for the 2024-25 NBA season

Gradey Dick, Raptors

Most people only remember Dick’s rookie season for the terrible struggles he had at the beginning. He hit just 11 of his first 44 attempted triples before January 1 and looked completely outclassed, averaging just 3.5 points per game during that span.

Dick went to the G League to gain more experience and seemed to figure out some things.

After the New Year, Dick was a completely different player. He started 16 games for the Raptors, shot 39.1 percent from three-point range and scored a solid 10.8 points per game. The slow start kept him from even coming close to being an All-Rookie, but he’ll get some attention if he continues his second-half form.

Dick’s shooting improvement wasn’t just good: it was nothing short of elite. Samson Folk from Raptors Republic was found His moving three-point shooting percentage over the final 40 games of the year was one of the best of any player. Those shots came off tough plays, running off screens, stepping back, receiving passes, repositioning, etc. Dick was selected for his NBA-ready shot, and he proved he could match up with the best.

Dick’s shooting will always be valuable. But he does even more than that, as he has great secondary playmaking ability and good size (6’4″). He’ll get plenty of opportunities on a young team and has a good chance of breaking into the starting lineup with so many players gone from the start of last season, including starter Gary Trent Jr.

Trey Murphy III, Pelicans

Murphy’s big breakout was supposed to come last season, but injuries slowed that development. A knee injury kept him out of the lineup until Dec. 1. When he did play, he was solid, averaging 14.8 points per game and starting just under half of his games.

The Pelicans have a tough situation to deal with given that Murphy and Herb Jones are both starting-caliber forwards. They could end up playing both of them, sending CJ McCollum to a backup role and starting just one true point guard in Dejounte Murray. Murphy may be good enough to force that scenario to happen.

Murphy needs to play a lot because he is one of the most electric shooters in the league. He has ample range on his 3-pointers and shoots a solid 38.0 percent on those shots.

Murphy is more than just a shooting threat, as he recorded 38 dunks last season. He’s a good athlete who has the potential to be a great scorer with his combination of shots and playmaking. He’s even improved his defense, going from a net negative to a slightly positive result last season.

Dyson Daniels, Falcons

The Hawks reportedly had high expectations for Daniels, making him one of the centerpieces of the Murray trade with the Pelicans. New Orleans has been one of the deepest teams in the league during Daniels’ career, and he hasn’t shown everything he’s capable of.

That will change on a new-look Hawks team where Daniels should be the first guard off the bench to start the year.

Daniels is already one of the league’s best perimeter defenders, making him a great matchup for Atlanta’s offense-first guard combination of Trae Young and Bogdan Bogdanovic. He has tremendous tools at 6’7″ with a 6’10” wingspan, and His technique is textbook.He moves his feet and positions his body as well as anyone in the league. He is capable of excelling in different types of assignments, as he demonstrated when covering Shai Gilgeous-Alexander during the Olympics.

Daniels also has great court vision. With his size, he can become an elite passer — he recorded eight assists for Australia in their summer win over Greece. His one key skill will be his shot. He hit just 31.2 percent of his 3-pointers in his first two years in the league.

There is some hope that Daniels’ three-point shooting can improve. His form looks good and he did. He made 38.5 percent of his three-pointers in ParisHe had good range and a quick release on those shots.

At just 21, Daniels is far from a finished product. His defense will earn him plenty of minutes and his scoring could catch up next season.

The 25-year-old striker is said to be interested in joining De Zerbi’s side and has already committed to a five-year contract with Marseille, subject to the deal being finalised.

That news has now been confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who says the improved offer of €27 million ($29.4 million) has been rejected by the Gunners.

Although Arsenal are hoping to raise funds to help with other signings, they are not willing to sell Nketiah on the cheap.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta managed to get £34m ($43.4m) from Fulham for Emile Smith Rowe and could be looking for a similar fee for the striker.

There has been some calm on the transfer front after the club made official the acquisition of Riccardo Calafiori for 45 million euros ($49 million).
