Mikel Arteta’s side sported a four-point lead over second-placed Man City at the top of the league table heading into the weekend, trimmed by a run of two draws and one defeat over their recent trio of domestic games.

Just as the team began to get fully healthy, they were dealt another blow as one of the club’s biggest stars suffered an innocuous injury just before kickoff.

About 15 minutes before kickoff of Arsenal’s match with Leeds United on Saturday, January 31, multiple reports claimed that Bukayo Saka was out of the starting lineup.

The reports claimed that Saka had suffered an injury, and was replaced by Noni Madueke in the XI. Christian Norgaard, the extra man traveling for Arsenal, was promoted to the bench to maintain the proper numbers.

It was not immediately known what the nature of Saka’s injury was. The Jugo Mobile will update this story as more information becomes available.

Despite hammering Leeds 5-0 at home, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard had to be substituted due to injury concerns leaving a sour taste in Mikel Arteta’s mouth before the epic clash against Liverpool this weekend. 

Although the Gunners could miss two of their most influential players in such a great match against the reigning champions, they have decent squad depth to counter the situation. 

Ahead of the match at Anfield on Sunday (August 31), Arteta opened up on Saka and Odegaard’s availability for this fixture. 

“Bukayo is doing better, but he will be out for a few weeks. No surgery. It’s not as bad as the previous one, very unfortunate. It was an action that required full power from him, had to change direction and he felt something,” Arteta told the media ahead of the away game.

Meanwhile Odegaard has also not returned to training and his involvement in the Liverpool clash is a major doubt. 

The Arsenal captain needs to return to training for further assessment of his availability but until now it seems the Gunners will face the Reds without two of their star players. 

“He hasn’t trained yet and, if he does, it will be tomorrow,” Arteta stated about Odegaard.

Apart from Saka and Odegaard, Arsenal have several other injury concerns starting with Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Christian Norgaard and Ben White. All of them could miss the upcoming fixture. 

The Gunners are expected to start with the same defense that they deployed against Leeds United with Noi Madueke expected to replace Saka on the right flank. 

New signing Eberechi Eze could start on the left with teenager Ethan Nwaneri replacing Odegaard if the Norwegian fails to make the fitness cut. 

Another alternative could be Arteta changing his system slightly and going with Mikel Merino in midfield instead of starting with Nwaneri right from the off.

What happened between Saka and Carvajal?

Saka was a key figure all night for Arsenal but it was a game of contrasts for the England international.

The 23-year-old attempted an ill-advised Panenka penalty in the opening stages, which was easily saved by Thibaut Courtois, before making amends with a clever opener for the visitors on 65 minutes.

However, Arsenal’s No.7 was involved in a heated exchange with Carvajal, as he walked down the Bernabeu tunnel at half-time.

Numerous Spanish outlets have indicated Carvajal took issue with Saka, and after what appeared to initially be a sporting handshake, the Spain captain grabbed Saka, as Real Madrid staff quickly piled in to separate the pair.

Ben White dashed in to back up Saka, with Carvajal angered by what he viewed as ‘disrespect’ from Saka, in the latest flashpoint between the pair.

Carvajal infamously gave Saka the ‘cry baby eyes’ during Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 final win over England last summer after fouling the winger.

As per reports from Mundo Deportivo, despite not being a part of Real Madrid’s playing squad, Carvajal’s antics will be looked into by UEFA on the back of referee Francois Letexier’s post-match report.

The 33-year-old could be sanctioned by UEFA based on their rules over player conduct with Diario AS indicating he could be banned for up to four games starting next season.

Article 11 of UEFA’s Disciplinary Code, states: “Players must respect the laws of the game and adhere to the principles of ethical conduct, loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship.”

Mikel Arteta’s initial assessment of Bukayo Saka’s injury was one of concern.

“He felt something in his hamstring,” Arteta confirmed after the Crystal Palace match. “He could not continue, he has to be assessed. Pretty worried about that one.

“It’s difficult to guess now. They have tested him but difficult to say how bad it is.”
