NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes the conversation surrounding Caitlin Clark has moved far beyond basketball, creating an unfair situation for the Indiana Fever star. Caitlin Clark has been at the center of nearly every major WNBA conversation since entering the league.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes those conversations have now moved far beyond her performance on the court. Speaking Thursday at the Game Plan Summit in New York, Silver addressed the criticism of WNBA officiating and the polarizing reaction to physical plays involving Clark. He said the Fever guard has unfairly become a “political football” for people attempting to use her as part of larger cultural debates.

“She has become a bit of a political football in this country, and I think it’s incredibly unfair to her,” Silver said during an onstage conversation with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin.

Silver praised Clark as both a player and a person, saying the 24-year-old wants to focus on improving her game rather than being pulled into arguments involving race, politics and officiating.

“I have come to know Caitlin really well,” Silver said. “She’s an incredible player and also an incredible person.”

Adam Silver addresses Alyssa Thomas incident

Silver’s comments came after the June 24 game between the Fever and Phoenix Mercury.

Adam Silver sends strong message about Caitlin Clark controversy: ‘Incredibly unfair’

NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes the ongoing conversations surrounding Caitlin Clark have moved well beyond basketball, creating an unfair situation for the Indiana Fever star. Caitlin Clark has spent much of her young WNBA career at the center of debates involving officiating, physical play and the league’s rapid growth.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes those conversations have now become something much bigger. Silver addressed the attention surrounding Clark during an appearance at the Game Plan Summit in New York on Thursday. While acknowledging that WNBA officiating must improve, Silver argued that the discussion involving Clark has moved beyond missed calls and basketball.

“She has become a bit of a political football in this country, and I think it’s incredibly unfair to her,” Silver said.

Silver’s comments came as the league continues to deal with the fallout from a controversial play involving Clark and Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas.

What did Adam Silver say about Caitlin Clark?

Silver was asked about the June 24 game between the Fever and Mercury in which Thomas made contact with Clark’s neck during the second quarter. No foul was called during the game. After reviewing the play, the WNBA upgraded it to a flagrant foul and suspended Thomas for one game for “recklessly making contact with her fist.”

Silver does not believe the larger controversy is truly about that individual call.

“Ultimately, the issues around Caitlin Clark are not largely about officiating,” Silver said. “It’s become political ping-pong with her.”

Silver added that he has gotten to know Clark and described her as both an “incredible player” and an “incredible person.” The NBA commissioner said Clark should be allowed to concentrate on improving as a basketball player without continually being placed at the center of larger cultural and political arguments.

“She’s a young woman who’s trying to improve her game,” Silver said.

Clark’s arrival has helped produce major increases in television ratings, ticket sales and overall interest in the WNBA. That popularity has also made nearly every incident involving her a national story, particularly when it concerns officiating or physical contact.

Alyssa Thomas incident leads to ugly reaction

Thomas said the contact with Clark was accidental, but the controversy did not end with the league’s suspension. The Mercury forward later revealed that she received death threats and racist messages following the play. Thomas also criticized WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, saying the league needed to do more to protect its players from harassment.

Clark strongly condemned the reaction directed at Thomas.

“It’s not acceptable,” Clark said. “There’s no place for that in our game or in society.”

Fever coach Stephanie White also spoke out against the threats and racist abuse, making it clear that criticism of a play should never become personal harassment. That distinction was at the heart of Silver’s message. A missed call and the league’s officiating standards can be examined without turning Clark or Thomas into symbols in an argument that stretches far beyond basketball.

Adam Silver admits WNBA officiating must improve

Silver did not dismiss concerns about WNBA officiating.

“Do we need to improve WNBA officiating? No doubt about it,” he said.

The WNBA has faced increased scrutiny over its referees as more viewers have started watching games. Every questionable decision is now clipped, replayed and debated across social media within minutes. Clark has repeatedly found herself in the middle of those conversations. She recently said another missed call left her playing with a leg contusion, adding more attention to the physical treatment she receives from opposing defenses.

However, Silver believes reducing every discussion to Clark prevents the league from addressing officiating as a broader issue affecting every team and player. The WNBA can evaluate missed calls, review flagrant fouls and demand more consistency from its officials. Silver’s larger point was that those debates should remain about basketball.

Clark did not ask to become a political figure when she entered the league. According to Silver, it is unfair that so many people continue trying to make her one.

The ‘Last Hurrah’ may have just aired, but The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 isn’t over yet, so make sure you know when to stream Episode 8 on Prime Video.

We are weeks away from Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah’s story coming to an end, more than three years after that fateful summer in Cousins Beach.

The hit YA adaptation, based on Jenny Han’s novels, is four episodes away from its highly anticipated (and a little dreaded) finale. For those who want to spoil it for themselves, the books are right there and ready to read if you want to find out Belly’s endgame, but Han has teased changes to the story, so it could have a different ending.

After the release of Episode 7, there’s only one question fans are going to be asking: when is Episode 8 out?

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 8 release date & time

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 8 will be released on Prime Video at 12am PT/3am ET on Wednesday, August 27. You can check what time it drops in other time zones below:

9am Central European Summer Time

12:30pm India Standard Time

5pm Australia

7pm New Zealand

How many episodes are there in Season 3?

There are 11 episodes in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, with the 11th and final episode set to air on September 17.

This is a bump compared to the first two seasons, which had seven and eight episodes respectively.

Article continues after ad

In an interview with The Wrap, Han teased: “I’m always thinking about my book fans. There’s Team Conrad book fans, and there’s also some Team Jeremiah book fans… there were teams even when I was writing them years ago, so it’s not new, although it is pretty intense with the show.

“For me as a storyteller, I have to feel good about what I’m making, and I have to feel proud of it, and I have to be excited by it. I just write what I think is the best story, and that’s what I’ll stand by.”

What happened in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 7?

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 7 was another dramatic chapter, with Conrad finding out about Jeremiah cheating on Belly and admitting he still loves her.

Article continues after ad

“I still love you. I don’t think I’ll ever get you out of my system. You will always be there. Here. It’s not all of a sudden, Belly. Don’t you realize that? It’s always,” he says, adding that while he loves Jeremiah because he’s his brother, “when I see the two of you guys together, I f**king hate him.”

Article continues after ad

Understandably, Conrad asking her to be with him instead comes with a lot of pressure, but she (perhaps unwisely) stands her ground. “You will never be what Jere is to me,” she tells him.

“He’s my best friend. And he loves me no matter what, and he doesn’t take it away when things get hard. Nobody has ever treated me the way that he does. Nobody. Least of all you… you and I were never anything.”

Article continues after ad

By the end of the episode, Belly leaves Conrad alone on the beach, with his hopes and dreams ripped and scattered in the sand – unless something changes…

If you ever wondered what happens to the thousands of tennis balls used during Wimbledon after the championships are over, you can rest assured that they’re going to a good cause.

In a heartwarming twist to the iconic tennis championships, organizers have donated many of the tennis balls to serve as shelters for field mice in the UK.

While many of the balls make their way to England’s field mice, Wimbledon also sells some of its used tennis balls on-site at the tournament. The proceeds typically benefit the Wimbledon Foundation.

The eco-friendly mice initiative, which many fans don’t know about, has supported British wildlife for years.

The second life of a yellow ball! ?Used tennis balls are carefully cleaned and then turned into shelters in which mice can nest and rest. They are placed in tall grass and among bushes – where the rodents feel safe. pic.twitter.com/KYJBaV4zrS

How Wimbledon’s tennis balls became tiny eco-homes for UK field mice

Tiny Harvest mice across the pond, which are about the size of a thumb, typically lived in tall grass in the countryside for protection against predators. However, they’ve faced habitat loss over the years due to industrial farming methods and changes in weather patterns making a it a concern for conservationists.

In the early 2000s, Wimbledon organizers entered into a partnership with the All England Lawn Tennis Club and Wildlife Trust to help get the balls repurposed into homes for the tiny critters.

The tennis balls are attached to poles with a small hole cut into them, making it a perfectly ready-made shelter for the mammals, especially for nesting females.

It’s not just a win for wildlife, but also a small gesture that can have a big impact.

The sight of a harvest mouse peeking its head out of a bright ball has become a charming symbol of how major sporting events can make a big serve, not just on the scoreboard.

Tennis fans can’t get enough of Wimbledon’s wholesome wildlife win

Wimbledon may be known for fierce competition on the court, however, the fuzzy yellow tennis balls turned into mouse mansions have social media abuzz.

After several photos of the repurposed mouse homes went viral on X, fans started raving about the eco-conscious initiative calling it the “cutest sustainability story of the summer.”

One user wrote on X, “This is the sweetest idea! Look how happy they are!”

“This is so cool,” another person wrote.

“From Centre Court to mouse resort Wimbledon’s real champions might be the harvest mice,” a third person said.

“Turning tennis balls into mouse shelters—ingenious! Who would’ve thought tennis balls could serve as ‘real estate’ for mice? That’s creativity in action,” another person commented.

“My day is happier now that I learned this,” someone else wrote.

While Davante Adams missed three weeks of action due to a hamstring injury, the Jets’ newest WR still saw plenty of screen time during NFL Sundays.

For the last few seasons, Adams has starred in a series of Taco Bell commercials that are impossible to miss. After his trade to New York, those commercials — and their nature — were immediately brought back to light for understandable reasons.

Here is more on Adams’ Taco Bell campaign and how the international chain had fun with fans following the major trade.

Davante Adams Taco Bell commercial

The campaign’s premise comes from a simple statement in one of the first advertisements: “We wanted Davante in our ads. He wanted a Taco Bell in his house.”

As such, Adams’ home first featured one Taco Bell order window and kitchen in the commercials. From there, the commercials documented the various oddities that would come with Adams having a fast food chain inside the living room of his home.

NFL HQ: Live NFL scores | Updated NFL standings | Full NFL schedule

Hilarity ensued, including a second location opening elsewhere in the living area because “business is booming.”

Naturally, with Adams moving across the country from Las Vegas to New York (or New Jersey), fans wondered what would be happening to his in-home Taco Bells.

“Nah, we don’t travel. I’ve got two [Taco Bells] in my Vegas crib, so we’ll just keep those over there and start a new deal here,” Adams said during a surprise post-trade appearance on the Pat McAfee Show.

Taco Bell even had some fun with it, quoting a post on X (formerly Twitter) that suggested that there could soon be a home on the market with two fast food restaurants within.

In the quoted post, the chain shared a fake listing of a home, featuring a photo of a Taco Bell in the dining area.

They also responded to a pressing inquiry from NFL Network’s Adam Rank:

we think you know the answer to that

Seeing how Adams’ trade sparked a reunion with Aaron Rodgers, maybe it’s only a matter of time before he finds a way to set up an in-home Taco Bell wherever he eventually settles in the New York metropolitan area.

It’s rare for an exhibition fight to receive this much media attention. It’s exceptionally rare for a rematch to take place and have more interest than the original matchup. However, it wasn’t what happened in the ring between Floyd Mayweather and John Gotti III that fueled interest in the Aug. 24 rematch, but what happened afterward.

His return fight will take place in Mexico City and will be broadcast on DAZN PPV.

LOOK: Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti III 2, live on DAZN

Last June, I attended the first Mayweather-Gotti matchup at the home of the Florida Panthers. Like most Mayweather exhibitions, it was a quiet night, with safe fights featuring the likes of Hector Lombard, the controversial Jarrell Miller and Ulysses Diaz. The crowd was packed before the main event began, a rarity in boxing today.

There was a lot of hype in the air when Mayweather returned to Florida for the first time since facing Logan Paul in 2021. Mayweather and Paul were surrounded by media all week. The former did what he does best and Paul survived on a rainy night. The same was expected with Gotti III because he was an MMA fighter who had barely made his debut in professional boxing.

Mayweather arrived with his entire family, making for a lengthy entrance. Gotti, the grandson of infamous gangster John Gotti, kept things simple. The action in the ring looked like the norm for any Mayweather exhibition fight, the Hall of Famer dominating every aspect of the contest while playing with his food.

Unlike his opponents in previous exhibitions, Gotti looked competent against Mayweather at times. Still, Mayweather is Mayweather. He bullied his opponent in the sixth round, though Gotti fought back. Suddenly, in a bizarre moment, referee Kenny Bayless called off the fight because Gotti was constantly holding him. That infuriated the New Yorker, who thought he had a chance to beat Mayweather at his own game.

An outraged Gotti attacked Mayweather after the fight was stopped. This prompted the former champion’s entourage to enter the ring and before you knew it, they were facing off against Gotti’s team. It was complete chaos.

Fans were getting nervous, with the ring and stadium floor filled with inpiduals fighting each other. The ring was packed and Mayweather quickly exited the venue via the ring ramp before things got serious. After he left, both teams continued to brawl in the stands, leading to skirmishes in the backstage area.

It’s CHAOS right now, there’s a fight in the ring while Mayweather runs back.

A prominent member of the media filmed what happened behind the scenes, which included family members. For about 15 minutes, it looked like a rerun of Malice at the Palace.

“From the beginning, tensions were high between Floyd and I,” Gotti said. DAZN through Social boxing“He had a lot of negative energy coming into the fight, as did I. He tried to talk trash right away at the beginning of the fight, and when I was on the defensive for the first four rounds of the fight, I just took it. As I started to get comfortable in the fight, I started talking trash a little bit further back.

“If I had knocked him down, shown him my belly and submitted, he would have been allowed to talk trash all night, but the fact that he was giving it back suddenly became a problem and the referee warned us in the fifth round before the sixth. He didn’t give us much warning though. We just grabbed each other, said a few words and then he called it a day.

“I was upset, I felt like I was getting comfortable in the fight at that point, and I was in the fight, I started to get my second wind and I felt like my best round was stolen from me, so I just went with the emotion.”

The tension eased as the night drew to a close. Some fans were relieved by the unpleasant chaos and social media lit up much more than during the main event.

As everyone knows, controversy makes money when it comes to entertainment and sports. With a net worth of over $400 millionMayweather knows how to take advantage of a financial opportunity better than anyone. That’s why this rematch will take place.

Since Mayweather has a huge fan base and almost everyone has access to streaming services, there will be more attention on the rematch due to what happened last time. It has been promoted appropriately, with multiple press conferences and lots of publicity.

What will happen when Mayweather and Gotti meet for the second time?

Tottenham’s summer has already been full of departures, but if the latest reports coming out of the club are to be believed, then one first-team player has decided to stay.

Midfielder Oliver Skipp has apparently turned down a transfer to Leeds United, opting to remain with Spurs for now.

As the Londoners prepare for their first pre-season game against Hearts in Scotland, they have already been involved in significant activity in the transfer market.

New faces Lucas Bergvall and Archie Grey They are already integrating into the team, while Japhet Tanganga, Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier and Ivan Perisic left in the summer.

We can confirm the departures of Japhet Tanganga, Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier and Ivan Perisic following the conclusion of their contracts.

We thank Japhet, Ryan, Eric and Ivan for their service to the Club and wish them all the best for the future ?

— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) June 5, 2024

For now, it looks like Skipp won’t be joining them, though that could still change.

The 23-year-old, who has been at Tottenham since his youth, is said to have turned down the chance to reunite with his former Norwich City manager Daniel Farke at Leeds United. The midfielder spent time on loan at the Canaries under Farke in 2020/21.

According Team talkSkipp wants to continue playing in the Premier League if he decides to leave Spurs, which could yet pave the way for Leicester to try and tempt him away.

Skipp’s future at Tottenham remains uncertain

Even if he decides to stay, Skipp’s status at Tottenham is far from guaranteed.

With the addition of new midfielders Bergvall and Gray to the squad, his chances of getting regular playing time appear to have diminished even further.

Tottenham have also been linked with further midfield signings, including Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher.

Leicester, According to Football InsiderThey are willing to try to offer him the appeal of first-team football, as they emerge as a possible alternative option.

Remember Quibi? It was an easy punchline (or punching bag) in the early days of COVID, when a platform structured around Qui(ck) Bi(tes) that could be viewed both vertically and horizontally failed miserably. But a lot of solid talent produced the platform’s first batch of content, and it didn’t deserve to completely disappear into the ether. From Veena Sud The strangera full-length reboot of his series that would otherwise have been relegated to the dustbins of the streaming era.

THE STRANGERSTREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The essence: Claire (Maika Monroe) is a rideshare driver for “Orbit” (a clever mash-up of Uber and Lyft) who takes Carl (Dane De Haan) to the Los Angeles airport. She should have known she was in for quite a ride when Carl insists on sitting up front, and her attempts at pleasant conversation quickly backfire when Carl details a series of murders he just committed. An accident seems to undo Carl, but he keeps finding ways to torment her physically and psychologically. Using all manner of gadgets, he stalks Claire mercilessly as she tries to escape his grasp. During a restless night that stretches into dawn, she tries to stay one step ahead of her brutal enemy only to discover that he appears to have predicted her exact next move.

What movies will it remind you of? Collateral for the smartphone set.

Performance worth watching: Remember when Dane De Haan was on the cusp of becoming the creepiest character in Hollywood 10 years ago? (Did Barry Keoghan pick him right in the market?) Either way, The stranger It’s a reminder of what we’ve been missing, and apparently only Christopher Nolan is in the cast. Oppenheimer remembered.

Photography: Everett Collection

Memorable dialogue: It’s a threatening text message that really steals the show, using a memorable nickname to lash out at Claire: “YOU SHOULD HAVE RUN ME OVER WHEN YOU HAD THE CHANCE, NANCY PELOSI! #DumbShitScaryMovieBitchesDo”

Sex and skin: An inflatable sex doll makes a memorable appearance, but other than that, nothing of the sort.

Our opinion: It’s easy to feel the unnatural pacing of a short-form series forced into a feature-length film. Every 8 minutes or so, The stranger It features an artificial mini-climax or cliffhanger ending that seems to lead into a soft reset. The constant changes of scenery become incredibly overstimulating when crammed into one sitting. Similarly, Carl’s ruthless omnipresence begins to strain credulity at points where all of his betrayals play out consecutively.

But the biggest flaw of The stranger It’s just that this iteration of the story seems to have missed its moment of relevance. Sud’s use of the algorithm as the truest source of horror has the aura of post-Cambridge Analytica panic written all over it. While this project technically predates the algorithm villains of Principle and Mission: Impossible – Dead ReckoningThe featured version of this story now sadly lives under its shadow.

Our calling: SKIP IT. The stranger It never quite overcomes the limitations of its original format of episodic, synthetic scenes. Though Monroe and De Haan are talented actors, they are stuck playing derivative, generic beats within a family horror thriller cloaked in faux-contemporary relevance.

It looks like Travis Kelce is leaving his television days behind.

Kelce revealed that he turned down the opportunity to appear on NetflixThe new program of Receiver During a recent appearance on the Doing business with the boyspodcast. The new reality show, premiering July 10, follows five of the NFL’s top receivers. The Netflix series is a spin-off of Attacking playerwhich included Kelce’s teammate Patrick Mahomes.

“After Pat did it, I got asked about it. I don’t know. I’d rather just play ball, man. I’m doing enough with the podcast and all that,” Kelce said.

She added: “I’m over that reality shit. I’m out of that shit.”

Kelce’s remarks may come as a surprise considering the NFL star is preparing to present aMain videosplit ofAre you smarter than a fifth grader? He is also set to appear in Ryan Murphy’s new horror drama, Grotesque.

The Chiefs tight end may be moving away from reality TV, but he recently announced that he’s still looking for more “movie deals.”

Kelce announced this during a recent episode of the podcast he hosts with his brother Jason Kelce, titledNew Heightswhen they addressed a fan theory that said he had recently been cast in Happy Gilmore 2.

Photo: Randy Shropshire

“I didn’t even know there was a vacancy forHappy Gilmore 2But if there is, I’ll be a fucking extra,” Travis joked. “You know, anything to avoid it.Happy Gilmoreeither [an]“Adam Sandler movie or set, count me in.”

He later denied having been cast in the film, though he certainly seemed open to the opportunity.

Jason noted that “there’s really no evidence to support this rumor,” prompting Travis to chime in and add, “Other than the movie is being made and I’m looking into film deals.”

Travis said he would do “anything in the movie,” even if it means playing a caddy.

Although it seems that we will not have another season of Catching Kelce Any day now, the NFL star will likely have a bright future in film ahead of him.

Boston defeated Dallas in five games in the 2024 NBA Finals, returning the Larry O’Brien Trophy to its most familiar home for the first time in 16 years.

Led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics were able to put years of deep, empty-handed playoff runs behind them to win the franchise’s league-leading 18th championship. Boston capped off a dominant 64-18 season with a 16-3 playoff record.

Depth was the Celtics’ greatest strength. His superstar duo was accompanied by an incredible supporting cast of Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Kristaps Porzingis, and Al Horford, to name a few.

Former Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge laid the groundwork with the blockbuster trade that acquired draft picks to select Tatum and Brown. His successor, Brad Stevens, finished the job on the transactions he made on the sidelines when he took over in 2021.

Here’s how Stevens leveraged Ainge’s infrastructure to put together Boston’s 2024 NBA championship roster.

How Brad Stevens built the Celtics’ championship roster in 2024

The Celtics organization went through a surprising change in the 2021 offseason when head coach Stevens was promoted to fill Ainge’s position as president of basketball operations following Ainge’s immediate (and brief) retirement.

Stevens was long expected to be Boston’s next head coach, following in the footsteps of franchise legends like Red Auerbach and Tommy Heinsohn. Instead, Stevens was open to a new challenge.

The Celtics, who played without the injured Jaylen Brown (wrist), were just eliminated by the Nets in the first round of the 2021 NBA Playoffs, and their head coach of eight years felt the team needed a new voice .

That allowed Stevens to continue providing his basketball knowledge to the organization, but from a roster-building standpoint. Few knew this team better than Stevens, and it quickly became clear that he had a vision to maximize Tatum and Brown.

Trade Kemba Walker to bring back Al Horford

Stevens only waited two weeks before making his first major move, trading injured guard Kemba Walker to the Thunder to re-acquire veteran Horford during the 2021 offseason.

The Celtics receive:

Al Horford

Moses Brown

2023 second round pick

Thunder receives:

Kemba Walker

2021 first-round pick (became Alperen Sengun)

2025 second round pick

Horford missed the second half of the 2020-21 season with the Thunder to allow Oklahoma City to develop its young players. He returned to Boston refreshed and was welcomed with open arms by the team and fan base.

As it turned out, Horford still had a lot left in the tank. He started all 129 regular-season games he played for the Celtics between 2021 and 2023, helping lead Boston to an appearance in the NBA Finals and Eastern Conference Finals, respectively.

The Porzingis trade in the 2023 offseason returned Horford to a bench role, but he still ended up starting 33 regular-season games and 14 playoff games. The Celtics’ 2024 NBA title would not have been possible without his three-point shooting, his versatile defensive skill set and his unselfish attitude as a sixth man.

The Derrick White Trade

Stevens made a few other minor signings and trades that helped make key deals happen, like this one at the 2022 trade deadline.

The Celtics receive:

Derrick Blanco

The Spurs receive:

Jose Richardson

Romeo Langford

2022 first-round pick (became Blake Wesley)

2028 first-round pick trade

At the time, White was a lesser-known player showing significant signs of development in the Spurs organization. He was already receiving recognition for his IQ and tenacious ball defense, but he only shot 34.4 percent from 3-point range in his career.

The deal received mixed reviews at this time. Some were upset that Stevens gave away draft capital and a former lottery pick in Langford. Others saw the vision of adding another elite perimeter defender and playmaking guard.

In retrospect, White’s rise to becoming one of the most improved players in the NBA over the past two seasons was as impactful as any trade Stevens made. White evolved into a two-time member of the all-defensive team and a 38.0 percent 3-point shooter.

The Malcolm Brogdon Trade

The Celtics came up short in the 2022 NBA Finals, and Stevens responded to a glaring weakness by bringing in another ball-handling playmaker: Malcolm Brogdon.

The Celtics receive:

Malcolm Brogdon

The Pacers receive:

Aaron Nesmith

Daniel Theis

Nik Stauskas

Malik Fitts

John Morgan

2023 first-round pick (sent to Denver; became Julian Strawther)

Brogdon looked like the missing piece for Boston, averaging 14.9 points and 3.7 assists per game to become the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year. An elbow injury derailed his playoff productivity, playing a role in the disappointing loss. of the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Heat.

A few months later, Brogdon became the cornerstone of a deal that would propel Boston to a championship-caliber roster.

Trading Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis

Trading the heart of the franchise for Marcus Smart during the 2023 offseason was, without a doubt, the toughest decision Stevens had to make. Smart poured his blood, sweat and tears into the Celtics organization for nine seasons as Boston’s leader, but the team never got over the hump.

That heartbreaking move proved to be the difference in elevating the Celtics’ contender status.

The Celtics receive:

Kristaps Porzingis

25th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft (via Grizzlies, traded to Pistons; became Marcus Sasser)

Top-four protected 2024 first-round pick (via Warriors, traded to Trail Blazers in Jrue Holiday deal)

Brown bears receive:

Smart Frames

Wizards receive:

Tyus Jones

danilo gallinari

Mike Muscala

35th pick in 2023 NBA Draft (traded to Bulls, became Julian Philips)

In retrospect, it’s notable that Stevens managed to land Porzingis. and two first-round picks for Smart and expiring veteran contracts.

Even if Porzingis only played in seven playoff games, his outbursts in Games 1 and 2 of the NBA Finals helped Boston build a comfortable 2-0 lead. The star center averaged 16.0 points and 2.5 blocks in those two games, positioning the Celtics to win the title.

The Jrue Holiday Trade

He The most shocking trade of the Stevens era came because of an oversight by Boston’s Eastern Conference rival, Milwaukee.

The Bucks traded Holiday to the Trail Blazers for All-Star guard Damian Lillard.

The Bucks felt Lillard was the type of prolific perimeter scorer they needed to get back to the NBA Finals, but they couldn’t have expected the Celtics to swoop in and steal Holiday from Portland.

Just days before training camp for the 2023-24 season began, Stevens swung for the fences in a big way to land one of the best defenders in the NBA.

The Celtics receive:

Jrue vacation

The Trail Blazers receive:

Malcolm Brogdon

Robert Williams III

2024 first-round pick (via Warriors, from Marcus Smart trade)

2029 first-round pick

Holiday’s relentless physical defense and timely offense were crucial in Boston’s run to the 2024 playoffs. His championship DNA was exactly what the Celtics were missing in previous seasons that finished close to a title.
