The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing for the second half of the regular season to get underway following the All-Star break. Coming into the season, there was plenty of excitement, but for LeBron James, the priority is simple: finishing his career on a contending team.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” James’ agent Rich Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”

For Luka Dončić, the focus is on winning as soon as possible, and he wants the Lakers to build around him. Having reached the NBA Finals just a couple of years ago, Dončić is eager to return to that stage.

“Dončić being just 26 gives the Lakers a far longer timeline to build a championship-contending team, but that doesn’t mean they can slow down and take their time. Dončić told Lakers president Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick in May that he’s not interested in taking the slow approach in building a contender,” CBS Sports’ Jasmyn Wimbish wrote.

For the Lakers, it’s about finding the right pieces. Dončić thrives with a lob threat, and Jaxson Hayes is likely to be re-signed following this season.

“Jaxson Hayes completed the paperwork to become a Slovenian. He can join the Slovenian national team for Luka, which I’d like to say is one of the smartest things Jaxson Hayes has ever done because I think he’s just secretly signed a contract extension,” Brian Windhorst said.

When Hayes and Dončić share the court, their chemistry stands out compared to the Lakers’ other big-man pairings. It’s clear the two have developed a strong connection both on and off the floor.

Keeping Dončić comfortable with players like Hayes is exactly what the Lakers need to succeed. As long as that connection continues to grow, it strengthens Dončić’s commitment to a long-term future in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Lakers are gaining momentum each day as LeBron James is now on track to join them soon for his season debut.

As it is, the superstar forward recently entered LA’s G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, for the final rehabbing stage of his sciatica injury that kept him out for over a month.

For Brian Windhorst, a healthy and rejuvenated James gives the Lakers a major shot in the arm in competing and beating every group in the NBA.

But not against a team named the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“When you’ve got LeBron, Reeves, and Luka all healthy and playing well, I think the Lakers can beat anybody. The question is whether they can do it four out of seven [games], especially with where the Thunder are right now,” the NBA expert said in his recent appearance on ESPN Los Angeles’ The Sedano & Kap Morning Show.

“Probably not. But I don’t know if the Thunder will still be in that same place in the spring. Basketball is fragile, but they’re so resilient.”

Last Wednesday, the Lakers absorbed a huge eye-opener in facing the league’s best team. Playing against the reigning champs, LA got steamrolled by OKC, 121–92, in a wire-to-wire finish.

James playing could have changed plenty of things for the Lakers. But the fact that the Thunder didn’t even have their two other core players in Jalen Williams and Lu Dort, it just shows how wide the distance has been between both teams.

Still, Windhorst didn’t downplay the importance of James’ presence for the Lakers in general. As he claimed, the Lakers are overperforming despite a bottom-10 standing statistically, and having LeBron in the lineup would be tremendous.

Despite James’ extended absence, the Lakers have withstood challenges and are currently the No. 5 team in the West (8–4), largely because of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves’ leadership.

“They need to reach that ceiling. What I’d say about the Lakers is that you should be excited, because they’re hovering around the top four while performing like a bottom-10 team,” Windhorst stated. “Once they get LeBron back, that ceiling can rise. That’s what I’m watching for.

“But if your standard is the Thunder, you’re going to have a tough time.”

Right now, the Lakers’ priority needs to revolve around how they’ll integrate James back into the mix. Dealing with the might of the Thunder has to be set aside for now as they have to gradually learn and play their full system first, with their top player set for a highly anticipated return.

Wednesday’s NBA Draft doesn’t have your typical intrigue at the top of the board.

Duke sensation Cooper Flagg has been projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft for several years, and it was a foregone conclusion he would become a Dallas Maverick the second they won the lottery.

At No. 2, the San Antonio Spurs have been so locked in to Rutgers point guard Dylan Harper that they’ve largely passed on the traditional private workouts with other top prospects.

So, much of the focus has been centered on Rutgers guard Ace Bailey.

And not always to his benefit.

Bailey has drawn headlines – and some (perhaps unfair) criticism – for officially measuring 2 1/2 inches shorter than his roster-listed height (6-foot-7 1/2, not 6-foot-10) and for scheduling and canceling a workout with the Philadelphia 76ers, who own the No. 3 overall pick.

But he’s also an immense talent with unique upside.

Because of the combination of perceived red flags and all-star potential as a primary scorer, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst called Bailey “the most dangerous player in the draft” via his podcast, “The Hoop Collective.”

That moniker, however, is nowhere near bad as it sounds.

“I’ve called him… every year or maybe one or two (a year)… there’s a dangerous player in the draft,” Windhorst said. “They are dangerous – not because drafting them is bad – they are dangerous just because if you pass on them you could have egg all over your face.”

Windhorst compared Bailey’s situation – not his player profile – to that of Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic, who was passed on by four teams, including then-Sacramento Kings general manager Vlade Divac, whose decision defined his front office career.

But there’s a flip side to the coin when it comes to Bailey, Windhorst explained.

“Here’s a guy who has got some red marks on the sheet. You take him, he ends up being a bust, that’s bad. You pass on him and he goes to Brooklyn and wins rookie of the year and averages 27 points his rookie year, the team that passed on him looks bad.”

“That’s why I think he’s the most dangerous prospect in the draft, not that that’s a bad thing,” Windhorst concluded. “It sort of goes both way.”

Coming out of McEachern (Georgia) in the class of 2024, Bailey as the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect.

He and Harper joined forced and committed to Rutgers, but the Scarlet Knights failed to even make the NCAA tournament.

During his freshman campaign, Bailey averaged 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 46 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from three-point range.

Those numbers speak to his potential to fill up a stat sheet, but his draft process has been calculated, which has been the subject of criticism by NBA media.

Whether he becomes a superstar or fades into the background, Bailey is going to be one of the most intriguing prospects to watch in the entire 2025 NBA Draft class.

LeBron James does not appear to be a fan of Brian Windhorst, that much is true.

The Lakers supernova has enjoyed high-profile spats with a number of notable reporters and ex-reporters, including Skip Bayless and, most recently, Stephen A. Smith.

Yet, you’ll struggle to find a squabble quite as curious as his current row with Windhorst, one of ESPN’s more venerable NBA reporters.

? Follow The Jugo Mobile on WhatsApp

What are the origins of their tiff, and where is it headed? The Jugo Mobile has you covered.

LeBron James-Brian Windhorst beef, explained

James and Windhorst have crossed paths more than a few times over their respective careers. They first came into contact when James was a high schooler — Windhorst reported for the Akron Beacon Journal, James’ local newspaper.

Despite their dichotomous upbringing — James lived in subsidized housing as a youngster while Windhorst grew up in middle-class suburbia — there are a great many similarities between the Lakers star and ESPN personality.

Both attended St. Vincent-St. Mary’s High School. Both were raised on the west side of Akron. Windhorst’s mother, a health teacher, even taught sex ed to both boys.

“We know a lot of the same people,” Windhorst told the Tampa Bay Times in 2010, “and we had some of the same friends.”

Windhorst has been a roving reporter for much of the past 25 years. His primary subject: James, who he’s covered with The Cleveland Plain Dealer and, most famously, ESPN.

It’s unclear quite what the origins of James and Windhorst’s feud are. The two seemed, for all intents and purposes, cordial with one another; Windhorst was reportedly the only reporter allowed to talk with James when his then-girlfriend was about to give birth to his first son, Bronny.

As James’ star swelled, so, too, did Windhorst’s, but their relationship with one another was doomed to be marked by a single, unassailable fact: James was an athlete, Windhorst was a reporter. Their closeness resides on those fault lines, and as time has gone on, those distinctions have only grown more noticeable.

During a recent appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show”, James laid into Windhorst, calling him “weird” and debunking the veteran reporter’s claim that he inked a big-money endorsement with Nike because of a desire to mimic Michael Jordan.

“I see Brian Windhorst on one of these shows not too long ago. The guy who says he’s like my (expletive) best friend,” James said. “These guys … it’s weird.”

Windhorst set the record straight on his relationship with James shortly after his comments went viral.

“LeBron doesn’t owe me anything, I owe him a lot,” Windhorst said. “Just know, I met LeBron 25 years ago. And my understanding of LeBron and where people stand in his life has been crystal clear.”

Still, the feud seemed apparent.

Things reached a fever pitch in June when “Mind the Game,” a James and Steve Nash-led podcast, used a clip of Windhorst seemingly decrying the show — or, at least, the public desire for a show based on actual X’s and O’s — on “First Take.” The footage was then re-packaged to be made into a hype reel for the podcast.

James reposted the video, offering his own two cents in a reply.

Long ways from being done!! Sucks they have to listen to 2 guys who know nothing about basketball talk about basketball! Sorry @SteveNash https://t.co/he6BoaPoNg

The strangest quarrel in sports continues to gather steam all these years after James and Windhorst first came into contact with each other. Who knows when — or if — it will to a close any time soon, either.

The media erupted Thursday when news broke that the Los Angeles Lakers were hiring retired sharpshooter JJ Redick as their next coach, but one ESPN analyst is disappointed by the move.

Brian Windhorst understands that the hiring was necessary but believes that improving the workforce is much more important. The Oklahoma City Thunder acquired point guard Alex Caruso from the Chicago Bulls on the cheap just hours after signing Redick, which he said would have been more substantial to the Lakers organization.

“With all due respect to JJ, what the Lakers need more than a head coach are players like Alex Caruso,” Windhorst said on First Take. “If they hadn’t hired a head coach yesterday and announced they had acquired Alex Caruso, it would have been a bigger day for the Lakers. Here’s the reality: The 2020 banner can’t be taken down, but the Lakers haven’t been able to maintain a high-quality workforce.

The Lakers came up short against the Denver Nuggets in Round 1 of the postseason in a gentlemen’s sweep, but the matchup was closer than at first glance. Although Windhorst and the Los Angeles front office disagree on their priorities, all attention must now be focused on improving the roster with less than a week until the NBA Draft.

Brian Windhorst delivered one of the most scathing critiques of an athlete in recent memory, skewering Mavericks star Luka Doncic after he fouled out in Dallas’ Game 3 clash against the Celtics on Wednesday night. evening.

Speaking with fellow ESPNer Scott Van Pelt, Windhorst criticized Doncic for his overall performance and perceived lack of effort on the defensive end, a phenomenon best summed up, as Windhorst sees it, by his lazy attempt to draw an offensive foul. during Game 3, one which resulted in Doncic being eliminated from the contest. Boston won the game, 106-99, to move one game closer to the NBA championship.

Many fans were drawn to Windhorst’s message, believing that Doncic did little to help himself or his team when a comeback was in sight. Windhorst displayed eloquent prose as he attempted to take jabs at the Slovenian superstar, ending the appearance with a treasure trove of memorable comments.

“I thought it was perfect that Luka fell to the ground in an unacceptable position to go in with four minutes left with five fouls,” Windhorst said sarcastically as he set the table for his shot. “And then he immediately looks at the bench and says, ‘You better challenge him,’ like it’s the bench’s fault that he just made a terrible play.

“I’m standing here in the Mavericks tunnel. There’s the Celtics tunnel. That’s where the winners are. If Luka is ever going to be a winner coming out of this tunnel, he’s going to have to use what happened in these Finals . as a learning experience,” Windhorst said.

“His defensive performance is unacceptable. It’s a hole in the field… [The Celtics] “We’re ahead in this series because they’ve attacked him defensively.”

Windhorst’s words were quite strong. But once the Internet got hold of them, he refused to let them go, instead covering them with some 808s and presenting them not as a TV appearance, but rather as a diss track.

Brian Windhorst-Kendrick Lamar diss tracks, explained

Legions of viewers graced Windhorst’s TV spot with the beats of some of rap’s greatest speeches, from Kendrick Lamar’s “Meet the Grahams” (produced by The Alchemist)…

How will Doncic respond? Could he invoke Tupac Shakur with a “Hit ‘Em Up” response? Or will he settle for a colder, slicker retort, like Ice Cube’s “No Vaseline”? Only time will tell…

Still, few will forget Windhorst’s 74-second demolition of the Mavericks star. For that, we are grateful.
