How to choose a laser printer
When it comes to choosing any type of printer, the basics are the same. You probably already know that laser printing produces professional-looking text documents at a lower cost per page than similar inkjet models. But there are other features to consider.
All-in-one features Such as scanning and copying are included in all the models listed above, but a less common feature is fax capability. If you work with medical or legal documents, faxing is essential and you will need a printer that includes it.
Print speed refers to how quickly a printer will complete a page of a document. In our reviews we tested this capacity, measured in pages per minute. If you need to print frequently or in high volumes, it’s worth paying for faster print speeds.
Print quality is another concern, although most laser printers offer the best print quality you can get, with sharp, detailed letterforms that leave documents looking professional.
What you won’t get on most laser printers is color and photo printing capabilities. While there are color laser printers on the market, they cost more. And among them, not all color printers are suitable for printing photos, and those that are require special photo paper specifically for laser printers.
Printing costs They are a constant concern for any printer, as even affordable toner refills have some costs associated with them over time. Look for lower cost per page in our product descriptions and reviews, and check out inpidual reviews for a detailed discussion of how printing costs can make one printer better than another.

How we test laser printers
Every laser printer we review is tested on several performance measures, including print speed, quality, and print cost. We time and measure each test print in our benchmarking process and compare each print to samples of other models. In addition to usability and inpidual feature evaluations, we strive to accurately represent how well the printer will meet your daily printing needs.
In addition to basic printing of black-and-white text and mixed-media documents, we also tested scanning and copying capabilities. We compare the scan to the original image to see how accurately the scan captures detail and color, but we also measure the speed of the scan and the copy result.
To measure the cost of owning and operating a laser printer, we look at the current selling price of toner and the estimated number of pages a given toner cartridge will produce, and calculate the cost of printing a single page. The higher the cost, the more expensive a given printer will be over time.
While these tests are relatively standard across all printers we review, we’ll adapt them as necessary to handle different types of printers and unique capabilities of a given device. Wherever possible, we ensure that testing is performed in a way that is comparable from unit to unit and repeatable, so that we can confirm our conclusions.
