Tottenham reportedly made a major statement during the recent transfer window by refusing to enter into negotiations with three big clubs who were interested in signing Cristian Romero.
The Argentina international, signed for £42 million ($55 million) from Atalanta, has impressed for Spurs since joining the Premier League side on an initial loan deal three years ago.
The centre-back made 35 appearances in all competitions in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge in 2023/24 and played every minute of their first three league games of 2024/25 before the international break.
However, according to TYC Sports In Argentina, there was a chance the 26-year-old would not have been available to Postecoglou at all this season had Spurs bosses not been firm in their determination to keep him.
The report claims that Premier League rivals Manchester United, European champions Real Madrid and French giants Paris Saint-Germain all expressed interest in signing Romero ahead of the recent transfer deadline.
Spurs, however, refused to negotiate possible terms of a sale as they had no interest in cashing in on a player on whom they would likely have made a substantial profit.
Romero’s contract does not expire until the end of the 2026/27 season, so Spurs are in no rush to sell him anytime soon to avoid the risk of him leaving for a cut-price or nothing.
