The UFC returns to New York for UFC 309 for what hopes to be another epic night at Madison Square Garden.

UFC 309 will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The historic arena, home to the New York Rangers and Knicks, hosts classic boxing matches and WrestleMania I and can hold up to 19,500 people.

The main event being talked about is the highly anticipated UFC heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic.
A national wrestling champion, Jones (27-1, 1 NC) held the UFC light heavyweight title at various times between 2011 and 2020, with his reign disrupted by legal issues and failed drug tests. “Bones” attempted to fight then-UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, but negotiations with UFC CEO Dana White over purses for a potential fight went awry.
Jones did not compete for three years, returning in 2023 after Ngannou left the organization, and defeated Ciryl Gane to become the UFC heavyweight champion.
A firefighter, Miocic (20-4) is a former Golden Gloves boxing champion. He won the UFC heavyweight title in 2016 and defended it four times, holding the record for most successful title defenses in the division. Miocic traded wins and losses with Daniel Cormier for the belt from 2018 to 2020. The 42-year-old last fought in March 2021, losing the belt to Ngannou.
The two attempted to fight at UFC 295 in MSG, but an injury to Jones prevented that fight from happening. UFC CEO Dana White believes the fight will go ahead as scheduled, despite Tom Aspinall winning and defending the interim belt.
