The Gryphon is Destiny 2‘s first-ever collectible weaponized vehicle but Guardians don’t have long to obtain the heavy-duty Sparrow.
Heavy Metal is a brand-new limited-time mode exclusive to PvP introduced on May 9, 2025. Like Rite of the Nine, this is a temporary mode but with a far smaller window of availability.
While Bungie hasn’t said whether the event will return in the future, Heavy Metal’s first – and potentially only – run only stretches a week. This means you’ve got until May 16, 2025 to unlock its final reward, the Gryphon.
How to get The Gryphon fast
The Gryphon is obtained as the final Rank 15 reward from Heavy Metal’s Rewards Track. To get there, you’ll need to earn Event XP by playing Heavy Metal matches and completing Challenges.
While Event XP earned from matches – wins grant more – adds up other time, the majority of your progress will come from completing Daily and Weekly Challenges. These grant large lump sums of Event XP and should be prioritized.
Daily and Weekly Heavy Metal missions provide substantial Event XP.
To speed up progress, Reroll Chips earned through the Event Track can be consumed to reroll any Daily Challenge. This is particularly useful for any challenge that has a degree of RNG to it, such as piloting a specific vehicle (randomly decided) for multiple matches.
Completing every Daily and Weekly challenge should get you enough Event XP to reach Rank 15. Any additional matches played after challenges have been completed will speed up progress.
How good is The Gryphon?
The Gryphon isn’t going to be rocking the boat in any meaningful manner as far as Destiny 2’s established meta is concerned.
Vehicles are not allowed in most endgame activities, but this heavy-duty speeder does come packing some interesting qualities that could make it useful in niche situations.
The Gryphon’s weapons change properties depending on your Guardian’s equipped Super.
Like Exotics such as Hard Light and Dead Messenger, the Gryphon’s weapons can change elements. Specifically, its projectiles will match the element of your currently equipped Super, changing its secondary attack. See below for each effect.
- Void – Inflict Volatile
- Arc – Blinds enemies
- Solar – Applies Scorch
- Stasis – Freezes enemies
- Strand – Suspends enemies
In testing, the Gryphon’s raw damage was on the lower side, especially against any enemies above Minor. The Super synergy, while interesting and novel, isn’t potent enough to justify staying mounted on a vehicle and losing access to all weapons and abilities.
Chances are, the Gryphon’s low power is by design as a means of allowing Bungie to test how weaponized vehicles perform in a low-stakes environment. The Gryphon isn’t a must-have, but a neat alternative to Sparrows and Skimmers, able to mow down weak enemies while out on Patrol.
