Jessica Pegula’s quest for her first major title reaches an epic crescendo Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The American has already had a successful US Open, coming from the round of 16 of a major tournament to reach the final for the first time in her professional career. The world number six player even caused a surprise by dominating world number one Iga Swiatek in three sets in the quarter-finals.
That doesn’t mean the championship match will be any easier for Pegula, one of the best American tennis players of the post-Serena Williams era. She’ll face world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, a two-time Grand Slam champion who had a chance to win a third title at Flushing Meadows just a year ago.
Sabalenka lost in three sets to Coco Gauff in the 2023 final. But she won the first set with relative ease and looked set to clinch a potential title shot until a second-set capitulation gave the then-teenager an opening.
Sabalenka has a strong competitive background. She has reached the US Open semifinals four times, the best run among WTA players since Serena Williams reached the semifinals in a row from 2011 to 2016.
She has also had Pegula’s number of late, beating the American in five of their seven meetings.
But none of these feats have taken place in front of a New York crowd that is staunchly pro-Pegula. Given the difficulties she faced this time last year, such an environment could make a difference.
