Are the Golden State Warriors staying patient, or are they just striking out? Warriors’ free agency hasn’t been going as planned. They still haven’t figured out what will be happening with Jonathan Kuminga, and they haven’t made a single free agent signing.

One of the Warriors’ top free agency targets, Al Horford, is supposedly likely headed to Golden State. However, since a deal hasn’t been agreed to yet, some Warriors fans are starting to get worried.

This worry grew even more when center Jonas Valanciunas, who was recently acquired by the Denver Nuggets, was thinking about leaving the NBA for the EuroLeague.

Why does this matter to the Warriors? Without Valanciunas, the Nuggets were going to have ample funds to sign Al Horford as their Nikola Jokic backup. They could outbid the Warriors easily.

Luckily for Warriors fans, some recent NBA free agency news from ESPN’s Shams Charania, has quieted that concern

“Denver has informed Jonas Valanciunas’ reps that the franchise fully intends to have him honor his contract as the Nuggets view Valanciunas as a critical center addition to back up Nikola Jokic and play alongside him. Greek team Panathinaikos pursued Valanciunas in recent days.”

It doesn’t look like the Nuggets are going to need a backup center after all.

This means the Warriors remain the favorite to land Horford. While a Warriors-Horford signing wouldn’t necessarily be a game-changer for the Warriors’ roster next season, he would still be a nice start.

The Warriors need to build a championship roster around Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler ASAP. Signing Horford would be a small piece in that championship puzzle.
