How does the NBA Draft lottery work?
The 14 teams that missed this year’s postseason have been assigned odds for the No. 1 overall pick based on their regular season records.
The two teams with the worst records (Detroit and Washington) each have a 14.0 percent chance of landing the No. 1 pick. Charlotte won the tiebreaker with Portland, so it has a 13.3 percent chance of landing the top pick, while Portland has a 13.2 percent chance. The numbers get progressively smaller for teams with higher winning percentages.
As for the drawing itself, it will take place in a private room right before the ABC broadcast begins. Once the drawing is complete, the results will be placed in envelopes and read during the broadcast.
