Emanuel Navarrete looks to add more gold to his waist before turning 30 when he faces Ukrainian slugger Denys Berinchyk for the vacant WBO lightweight title on May 18. ESPN+.
Navarrete, 29, has been fighting for gold since 2018, when he won the WBO super bantamweight title against Isaac Dogboe. Since then, the Mexican fighter won gold at featherweight and super featherweight. He fought Robson Conceicao to a draw in November and recently recovered from hand surgery.

Navarrete, who will fight three times in 2023, is moving weight to try to take over a pision full of young, hungry stars like Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis.
Berinchyk, a silver medalist at the 2012 Olympics, won the European lightweight title in 2022. His last fight was a decision win in August against Anthony Yigit. It is the first time he has fought for a world title, something that has been a long time coming according to promoter Alexander Krassyuk.
“This is already a small anniversary for me because it is the fifth year in a row that I represent Berinchyk here recommending him for the mandatory position,” Krassyuk said via boxing scene. “I have asked Paco [Valcarcel] to nominate him as the fighter who has waited as long as possible to get his chance. He defended the WBO international title nine times in a row.”
Berinchyk won’t be the only Ukrainian competing for gold on the 18th. If Oleksandr Usyk beats Tyson Fury for undisputed heavyweight champion status and Berinchyk gets the job against Navarrete, it will be a big night for Ukraine.
