England manager Gareth Southgate has finalized his plans for Euro 2024 with his provisional 33-man squad now reduced to 26.
Southgate used the pre-tournament friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina to assess his options and a final decision has now been made.
Injuries and the club’s mixed form have played a key role in their decisions, with experienced defender Harry Maguire ruled out with a calf problem and James Maddison and Jack Grealish omitted.

Southgate’s squad will now head to Germany with just 13 of the 26 players also on their 2022 World Cup panel.
Who has been left out of England’s squad for Euro 2024?
Southgate was required to drop seven players from his provisional squad to meet UEFA’s final deadline of Friday 7 June.
Maguire, Grealish and Maddison are the eye-catching names alongside Liverpool duo Curtis Jones and Jarrell Quansah, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite.
Harry Maguire
- England caps/goals: 63/7
- Club: manchester united
A controversial choice for some England fans, but Southgate has remained loyal to Maguire throughout his tenure, despite his struggles at club level with Manchester United.
Maguire was first choice for Southgate’s England in the last three tournaments, including the defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final, where he scored in the penalty shoot-out at Wembley.
The injury is the main reason Maguire missed out, after joining the initial squad with a calf injury that forced him to miss the final weeks of the domestic season.
I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.
Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome a calf injury. Maybe I tried too hard to try to achieve it. I’m just absolutely devastated.

Southgate will now rethink his defensive plan with Lewis Dunk and Marc Guehi struggling to start as John Stones’ central defense partner in Germany.
Jack Grealish
- England caps/goals: 36/2
- Club: city of manchester
Grealish has also struggled for fitness during Manchester City’s Premier League title challenge, and his place as another of Southgate’s players was not enough to keep him in the team.
The former Aston Villa winger would likely be an option off the bench in Germany had he kept his place, with Phil Foden and Cole Palmer ahead of him in Southgate’s initial plans.
James Maddison
- England caps/goals: 7/0
- Club: Tottenham
Maddison received the news of his omission before some of the other players were left out, and the Tottenham attacker gave a frank assessment of why he was not included.
Devastated is not enough. I trained well and worked hard all week, but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when I returned from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set, which gave Gareth a decision to make. I still thought… pic.twitter.com/LwhIhCPDxS

A quiet return from injury in the closing stages of the 2023/24 season failed to boost the momentum of Spurs’ top four and was ignored in favor of fitter alternatives.
Curtis Jones
- England caps/goals: 0/0
- Club: Liverpool
Jones played a vital role in England’s Under-21 Euro triumph last summer and was rewarded with a call-up last month. With the Liverpool midfielder uncapped at senior level, it was a routine decision for Southgate, with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton preferred as cover for Declan Rice.
Jarell Quansah
- England caps/goals: 0/0
- Club: Liverpool
Jones’ Liverpool team-mate Jarrell Quansah was given a regular first-team place alongside Virgil van Dijk in Jurgen Klopp’s final weeks at Anfield.

He could become a regular again with Arne Slot in the coming months, but was passed over in favor of Guehi and Dunk.
James Trafford
- England caps/goals: 0/0
- Club: Burnley
Burnley stopper Trafford missed a significant part of last season through injury and, with UEFA rules only specifying the inclusion of three goalkeepers, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson will be Jordan Pickford’s backup.
Jarrad Branthwaite
- England caps/goals: 1/0
- Club: Everton
Branthwaite has been linked with a big-money move from Everton this summer after an assured campaign at the heart of the Toffees’ defensive line.
A cameo on his debut against Bosnia failed to convince Southgate and Joe Gomez’s versatility gave him priority in the last 26.
