2024 NBA Draft Odds: How Tiebreakers Work
If multiple lottery teams finish the same record, all of their selected lottery combinations are added together and then divided among them equally. If the number is odd and cannot be divided equally between the teams, the draw is used to decide the order of distribution of the remaining combinations.
The lottery is only used to determine the first four positions in the draft. After that, the remaining teams are simply placed in reverse order of their record, starting in fifth place. If teams with better records outperform other teams and into the top four, some teams may drop to fifth place or lower. In that scenario, as with teams not participating in the lottery, the draw will decide the draft order of the tied teams.
The NBA tiebreaker draw also applies to all teams for the second round, where teams return to the reverse order of their record (regardless of lottery results). For example, if the seventh-place team jumps to the number one overall pick, it will return to its normal position of seventh in the second round.
