For the fourth time in the postseason and the ninth time in their respective careers, Josh Allen’s Bills will meet Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs on Sunday night.
The stakes are as high as ever for both squads, with a trip to Super Bowl 59 on the line. Top-seeded Kansas City will host the AFC championship game as it continues its quest to three-peat. Second-seeded Buffalo, however, is seeking to finally break through with a Super Bowl appearance after years of coming up just short.
Mahomes and the Chiefs have stood in Allen’s way of deep postseason success for years. Kansas City, playing in its seventh consecutive AFC championship game, has accumulated three titles over the last five seasons, including each of the last two. Buffalo has often fallen victim to that success — in the Sean McDermott-Allen era, the Bills have made six playoff appearances prior to 2025, losing to the Chiefs in three of them.
This may just be Buffalo’s best shot yet at upsetting Kansas City and making a run to the Super Bowl, though. The Bills went 13-4 in the regular season as Allen made an MVP case (3,731 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, six interceptions). Over the first two rounds of the 2025 NFL Playoffs, they defeated Denver (31-7) and Baltimore (27-25). And only making things more interesting, the Chiefs’ lone loss this season with Mahomes playing came against the Bills (30-21) back in Week 11.

As long as the Chiefs have their Reid-Mahomes-Kelce trio together though, they’re the AFC’s team to beat. Kansas City has been battle tested this season, consistently pulling out wins in one-score games en route to a 15-2 regular season record. Mahomes didn’t have his best year (3,928 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, 11 interceptions), but a dominant defense and opportunistic offense got the job done on a weekly basis, with Kansas City then defeating Houston (23-14) in the divisional round.
While Kansas City could continue building its historic dynasty with a win Sunday night, Buffalo could get some postseason revenge and finally break through to Super Bowl 59. Bills vs. Chiefs is almost always a back-and-forth matchup full of fireworks — making Sunday’s game a must watch.
