The biggest event in global soccer history has come and passed.

In the largest World Cup field ever, featuring 48 teams playing across three North American countries, Spain emerged to win its first trophy since 2010. And with a halftime show, plenty of star performers and the MetLife Stadium stage, the 2026 World Cup final was a Super Bowl-level production.

For years, the World Cup final has often been one of the most-watched programs in the world. Billions of people globally have tuned in to watch the final game of the tournament. How many watched Spain vs. Argentina?

Here’s what to know about the 2026 World Cup final viewership figures.

How many people watched the 2026 World Cup final in USA?

Coming into the 2026 World Cup, the most-watched tournament final in the United States came in 2014, when an average of 26.7 million viewers watched Germany vs. Argentina, per Awful Announcing. However, with plenty of pre-final 2026 matches surpassing that figure, the Spain vs. Argentina final was expected to set a new U.S. record for the World Cup.

On Tuesday, that was confirmed. Fox announced that the final drew 38.9 million viewers, and the game had a peak of 51.7 million watchers in English-language broadcast. It smashed the record for most-viewed soccer broadcast in U.S, history.

In addition, Telemundo’s preliminary numbers showed that its Spanish-language broadcast had around 22.6 million. That brings the total to over 60 million viewers for the Spain-Argentina championship.

How many people watch the 2026 World Cup final around the world?

A massive figure was anticipated for global viewership of the 2026 World Cup final — with soccer being the biggest international sport, the tournament uniting 48 countries as the largest field ever and the United States playing host, the number of people who watched Spain vs. Argentina was expected to eclipse the estimated 1.5 billion from 2022’s final.

While Fox announced the total numbers in the United States, FIFA had not yet revealed how many people watched worldwide.

How do World Cup TV ratings work?

TV ratings for the World Cup in the United States follow the same formula as other major sporting events, such as the Super Bowl. Traditional in-home viewership data, such as Nielsen’s, calculate the average audience size for English- and Spanish-language networks, while out-of-home viewing, such as bars and watch parties, is then added in. Finally, networks factor in viewers on official streaming platforms. Those figures are all added up into a single total audience number.

To calculate total viewership across the world, FIFA has to aggregate the national statistics from each country to estimate global viewing.
